On January 20, the 45th President of the United
States will be sworn in, and approximately 6 billion people globally will watch
it happen. And there are some who won’t.
But, that won’t stop it from happening.
That seems to be the thing about life—when we least expect it, when we’re
not ready for it, when we think we need more time—it happens. Life, that is.
So, no matter what side you are or were on during the past 15 months of the
election debacle, here we are.
Tensions are high; you don’t have to be an expert in
emotional intelligence to recognize that some people are dealing with the
upcoming inauguration in very different ways, and those ways don’t often
reflect the views of their friends, family members or maybe even general
society. This often creates even more
tension. So, let’s try to take the
anxiety down a notch. Let’s try to
remember that at the end of the day, most people try to be decent citizens and
quality humans. Let’s try to extend
kindness to one another so that kindness becomes the norm, rather than the
exception. Let’s all remember who we
are.
To do that, maybe we should take a look at some of those who
came before us. Let’s look at someone
who dared to stare down the hostility and degradation of racism not with the arrogance
of a pointed finger and a rolled eye, but with the kindness of a smile and a
soothing word or two. It seems fitting
now, one day passed, to talk about MLK and what he stood for then, as well as
what his legacy stands for now.
You all know the “I Have a Dream” speech, and you all know
that it is a rhetorical masterpiece, ripe with all the devices and strategies
that good literature is famous for, but what it also is is one man’s blueprint
for his own American Dream. 54 years
ago, Dr. King delivered that speech about his dream of equality. In some ways, the world is a very different
place now than it was then. However,
there are some who would say it is not nearly as different as it should be.
So, your challenge this week is to carefully consider the
upcoming National event of the inauguration and what that means to people, as
well as think about the state of the world you currently inhabit. If Dr. King were alive today, do you think
his dream would be different? How so? If you think it would be the same, how come?
What is your own dream about the future of the world? Construct your own “I
Have a Dream…” and show me how you conceive of the American dream. What kind of impact will the next four years have
on that dream?
ReplyDeleteIf Martin Luther King were alive today he would be disgusted. At how far we have come over the years to just began to just began to repeat the nightmare of history all over again. Racism in today's society is very prominent in the way that people are racially profiled, stereotype and yet, still discriminated against. But, I don't have hope that the world will ever be equal let's face it, IT WILL NEVER BE. People have entirely too much hatred in their hearts for different racist. Or just such a provincial outlook they could never put themselves in someone else's shoes and think about how they would feel or react.
Martin Luther King's dream would be the same because, some major things have still not changed. People are still arrested, pulled over, question or harassed for the color of their skin. People are still wrongfully killed by police when they are innocent that's most likely promoted by the color of their skin. Because, most likely if they weren't a black the first line of self defense for an officer wouldn't be a firearm. Maybe, just a taser nothing life endangering.
I don't make plans for the world because, I just feel like the things that are going on today are pretty set in stone. Trump isn't the cause of all the racism being put out into the open if anything he's just the show puppet who says what others want to say but, don't have the guts to. Yes, Donald Trump says some racist stuff about many different ethnic groups but, he's honest and he's not the only one who feels like that. Trump has many die hard supporters who see things from the same perspective as Trump. These are the people we live around these are the people we know. Not, saying that you are racist because, you voted for Trump. However, the things that come out his mouth are very racist and for the most part those are the qualities and things that people like about him. So, don't shoot the messenger Trump isn't the only man who wants to say a lot of racist bullshit he's the representative.
I have a dream that America had some sort of balance. In order for their to be billionaires there's billions of people who have to starve. There's enough money in the world to go around why is wealth a main goal for people. It cripples society people are winning lotteries for millions and theirs people are dieing worldwide or going uneducated because, of money. It's just not idealistic to me. Not, say that everyone should be entitled to money but, everyone deserves to have a chance at a decent life. You have the people who work the system and the system that never worked for the people. There's homeless kids everywhere the system had failed them. They don't know what their future will hold if they even make to see the future. Yet, people turn their noses up at them like they are trash while they sip their hundred dollar wine like this shit isn't really going on. Why are these rich people traveling out of the country to make a difference when people in their very own country are crying out for help.
In the next four years, I don't know how the dream could be impacted. But, I do know that I feel a change coming either for better or for worst. Who knows what decisions Trump or Congress will make. All we can do is make the most of our lives like we've been doing. Trump or Hilary or anybody should never change your perspective of life because, you will never change theirs.
To be completely honest, I purposely don't get involved with politics. Everywhere you go, people talk poorly on Clinton and Trump and there is no escaping it. This is what our world has come to. An Earth full of grumpy citizens who have no hope from now on. I get it, some people are scared for what may come, and others are willing to see what this change will do. Regardless, it seems as if no one is happy. There is always something or someone causing chaos. If Dr. king were alive today, I think he would have a different dream. I think he would have a dream for peace. 100% peace without any shootings, bombings, raping, and reasons to hate everyone around you. I feel as if every day there is some kind of tragedy happening, and a lot of them are from disagreements with beliefs and opinions. Equality still isn't solved which is a factor that contributes to the lack of peace in the world. He would want peace. Complete peace. I have a dream that one day innocent people won't have to worry about being killed. I have a dream that one day people will feel safe to walk outside of their houses. I have a dream that one day we will live life without the fear of being attacked. Who knows what the next 4 years will do to my dream. Again, I don't let myself get too involved due to the circumstances of both candidates. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Maybe it will be good and maybe it will be bad. Whatever it COULD be, I have hope and so should everyone else.
ReplyDelete"Men often hate each other because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don't know each other; they don't know each other because they can not communicate; they can not communicate because they are separated."
ReplyDelete-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Today is January 19, 2017, a Thursday with one significant factor: President Obama’s last official day in office. For eight years, this nation has been led under the direction of our first black president in the midst of all the backlash, criticism, or controversy. I am genuinely stunned about how quickly time has passed. I remember being an eight-year-old girl at the time who did not understand the significance of his election (or politics in general because what eight-year-old does?), but I cheered with everyone that brisk, arctic January morning in Maryland where school was cancelled with extending traffic and emotionally moved, joyous people. Regardless of what political views we collectively have, we can all agree that things will definitely change, either for the good or bad.
Well now tomorrow at noon, that change will be inaugurated. The president-elect will be sworn in at a level where we all seem to be divided with additional uncertainty about the future. There are people who seem to be overjoyed about tomorrow, and people who, to put it into simple terms, wish to flee the country. I hate thinking about the way the 2016 election occurred, but it is impossible to forget and avoid all of this since it is the largest topic discussed right now. We are in a better position in comparison to the rest of this country's history, but the level of tension has skyrocketed since November because I hear so many disputes about it. The problem is that people cannot seem to agree and find solutions to push the country forward without attacking, offending, dismissing, or misconstruing others. It is solely due to the fact that the people who continue the problems have the lack of empathy and skills of compromise, education, respect, and tolerance. They forget that in the end, the overall goal is to live in a society that harmonically benefits all.
If Dr. King were alive today, he would be very proud to see how far the world has come racially in his dream that his “four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”. Racism still exists, but not to the horrible extent of what race meant during his time and before. I mean, just look. We live in a wonderful, multifarious society where everyone owns disparate talents. We witnessed an African-American president of the most powerful nation on Earth, and we all have the right to attend Oakcrest or whatever schools we desire, regardless of our backgrounds. Surely life was not like this in the 1960s, and for that, we are all grateful.
If he were alive, I believe he would have been disappointed by the chaos and nature of the election in both candidates, but I think he would continue to spread his dream with the facilitation of others to end the divide on serious issues (ex. police brutality). His dream would be for total peace without judgement.
The first above quote by Dr. King himself is a very meaningful quote which also applies to the truth of today. The quote does not only address the racial tensions of others. People are separated socioeconomically or on beliefs, and the rage is constantly repeated. He noted that the separation of others in terms of disagreements with each other, is the foundation to fear and hate. Separation incites the lack of communication and thus leads to intolerance and ignorance. When you think about it, why do some people deeply hate others? It has to be founded on this rationale.

DeleteI have a dream that people will finally completely respect and tolerate each other, thoroughly eradicating prejudice of all forms. I have a dream that hate and judgement will not fuel the engine of this country. I have a dream that economic hardships for all will end. I have dream that people will unify, compromise, and understand each other, effacing ignorance. I, too, have a dream of peace and stability.
DeleteI absolutely have no idea what Trump will do in the span of the next four years. I am terrified and uneasy at the moment. We just do not know what will occur, and based on what I saw in 2015 up to now, I am deeply concerned. This man creates headlines with his “interesting” quotes and largely ludicrous tweets, refuting every little thing someone states. Either way, I hope people of all backgrounds remain respected and that things in this country, politically-related or not, changes for the better. This, however, comes down to what the majority of people will do to fix these issues. I guess we’ll wait and see.

ReplyDeleteWith the inauguration being today, I am a little nervous for what is to come from this point forward. To be honest, I really don’t pay that much attention to any politics, but now I feel like I have to because you never know what Trump may be up to. We are all surrounded by angry people always ranting about the new face of our country, but there is no way avoiding it. All of these protests are not going to change who was elected. Everyone just needs to deal with it because there is no turning back. I know people may believe that Trump is not a good person to lead our country, but it’s happening so we all have to find some way to deal with it.
ReplyDeleteIf Martin Luther King were still alive today, he would definitely have a different dream. He may still have his dream from before, but along with equality I think he would also want peace throughout this country. Throughout this world, there have been so many attacks, bombings, shootings, and so many other uprisings all because the amount of hatred people carry for each other. Martin Luther King would certainly not be happy if he were still alive today because of these attacks and because of racism evolving again. Everything that he had worked for and dreamed of, all going to waste.
My own dream about the future of this world is definitely world peace. I have a dream that everyone in this world would come together and love one another. I have a dream that there are no more bombings or shootings just because we don't agree with someone’s lifestyle or their beliefs. I have a dream that innocent people will no longer be harmed in this world. I have a dream that people are no longer scared to be living in this world, specifically this country. I don’t know what these next four years will bring to this country or if it will even help in accomplishing my dreams, but I do know that the people of this country can take a stand and take this dream upon theirselves to make it happen.
For the past year or so, just like anyone else, I have lived through the publicity, talk, and gossip in regards to our presidential candidates. Trash-talking each political party has become normalized, among the normalization of news reports about illegal actions or unacceptable words targeted towards undeserving people, especially women. Although I am aware of the basic facts and the standard information that I should know about my president, I can’t say that I’m involved in the topic of politics. Coming from one that doesn’t choose to talk about her political affiliation, I have never been one that is passionate about politics, and that could possibly come from the fact that at this age I don’t have a say in who runs America. Chances are this will change, and four years from now I will be diving head first into the voting polls, but for now, all I can do is sit back and listen to the opinions and thoughts of my peers.
ReplyDeleteOf course I sense a ton of tension and worry in the air, but I think that’s natural when it comes to any huge change like this one. We have known the same leader for 8 years, and in my case and my classmate’s case, for half of our lives. So it’s expected that a dramatic change in our country will establish a sense of extreme tension and worry. We don’t know what to expect, we don’t know how this will all go down, and we don’t know where we will be by the time of 4 years, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give our newly inaugurated president a fair chance at his job. Some of us may not agree with the circumstances, some of us may wish things were different, and some of us may cringe when we hear the name “Donald Trump”, but we don’t have the power to change what is occurring. As much as some may despise believing it, this is reality, and we have no choice but to allow reality to happen.
If Dr. King were still alive today, I feel as if his dream would consist of the desire for genuine peace. Genuine kindness. Genuine love. The constant shootings and violence and attacks we so often hear about on the news is not something that anyone would want, especially Dr. King, a man that promoted his ideals of equality and freedom. Although we are not locked up in chains, we as a country need to be freed. From each other. From the violence, the hate, the arrogance. We have freedom but we need to free ourselves. With that being said, I have a dream as well.
I have a dream that one day I won’t turn my TV on to reports about shootings in the most innocent of places.
I have a dream that one day we as a country spread the love that we so desperately want in return.
I have a dream that one day acceptance will be mandatory, that no one should ever have to worry about being themselves, that one day no one will ever question their existence.
I have a dream that one day we will understand that violence is not the answer.
I can’t predict the outcome of these next four years. I am in the same position as is everyone else in this country. I don’t know what to expect, so all I am capable of doing is exhibiting my large amount of hope for my dreams of change. I hope that I can look back in four years and say to myself, “damn, I’m not the only one that hoped for these things”. I understand that it doesn’t take a handful, but a whole country to enforce the change we desire. So instead of dwelling on the possibilities of failure, how about we dwell on our opportunities to create change.
I have a dream, that one day, everyone in this nation will treat each other with respect and dignity. The recent election, that resulted in a new, openly racist president, Donald J. Trump, who was sworn in yesterday, has paved the way for those who feel the need to belittle someone. Throughout his campaign, Trump has advertised his belief in building a wall, and his opinion of all mexicans, blacks, and/or foreigners. Those in support of Trump, who feel the same as he does, with his victory in the election, now feel as though they have the right to ridicule others, as seen on various posts, and videos on twitter and facebook. Ironically, Martin Luther King Jr. day was celebrated on Monday. As an activist during the Civil Rights Movement, King led the country through major changes regarding equality. There are no longer segregated schools, or bathrooms, or public facilities. But with this drastic change in presidency, I, and many others fear that the progress that King and other civil rights activists tried so hard to create will diminish over the next four years. If King were still alive today I feel as though those problems faced today, due to racists will be a lot less visible. I hate to admit it, but I was recently watching Dance Moms, and on the show the girls were doing a dance about the book/movie “The help.” In the show, the mothers talked about how their daughters were being forced to play typical characters. The white girls on the team were the housewives, and the slaves were represented by the black girls on the team. Nia’s mother, who happens to be one of the only black girls on the team, explained to the other moms that as a mom, she's raises her children to understand that they will be treated differently due to their skin color. Although she is well mannered, polite, and successful women, all that was overlooked by the color of her skin, when she explained how she has been followed around stores, constantly being questioned by employees who believe she is stealing. I believe if King were still alive today, situations like this wouldn’t occur, I believe that people would treat each other with a lot more respect and dignity.
ReplyDeleteA person’s opinions and beliefs originate from their parents and grandparents, but I have a dream that people in the 21st century people will put their opinions aside and live peacefully as a polite and respectful community. It’s okay to have opinions, but it’s important to know that not all black people are bad, and not all white people are racists. It’s important to treat everyone the way you would want to be treated. It is important to treat every stranger with respect and dignity no matter their skin color, ethnicity, or beliefs. Everyone is human, and everyone should be treated as one.
ReplyDeleteThe new President Donald Trump is now in office and many people are taking this matter very differently. Donald Trump has made many comments repeatedly regarding different people and how he believes they should be treated. I personally am not too into politics. I'm not always on the news channel or reading the newspaper, but instead I listen to people around me or if something pops up on my social media i’ll skim through it. Trump continuously makes racist comments and it’s horrible that he says such things, but the fact that there are tons of other people who are racist and judgemental makes it terrifying. The only difference between Donald Trump and other racist people is that Trump says how he feels because he considers it appropriate and normal everyday people keep all their racist remarks in their head and sometimes show it through their actions. If Dr. King were alive he’d be disappointed by the fact that just when racism was slowly thought to be vanishing it never really was vanishing. Racism might be hidden by people or social media, but many people everyday still get judged by the color of their skin. Dr. King’s dream of equality would still be the same because the issues still on going today and sometimes it seems like that racism and inequality are worse than ever.
I have a dream that one day when people look back on history they can proudly say “i'm glad i'm not being judged by the color of my skin.” I have a dream that one day people can allow their children to go to school and not be worried about whether or not they’ll return home safely. I have a dream that women won’t be blamed for being raped because of what they were wearing. I have a dream that one day everyone will learn to love and accept each other for who they are. I have a dream that one day all these issues will just be something in a history book and people will be able to say “I can’t relate to that.”
In the next 4 year, this dream isn’t possible with a leader who sees nothing wrong with inequality and racism. Donald Trump will only make it harder to achieve this dream, but one day,I hope everything is perfect
ReplyDeleteThe election for the 45th president was a reality check, but the inauguration was just a reminder of how real this all is. It was funny at first, then kind of surreal, then angering, and now it is what it is. I’m not against him or for him, I just want my family, my future, and myself to be safe and secure and if he can do that for the next four years, then I’m a bay with his leadership. There is a bitterness that goes along with the realization of Donald Trump being the new president of the US, which is because he has voiced some things that have triggered negative emotions from myself and many other people who were certainly offended. The people of our country have voiced their discontentment through protests, riots, boycotts, and social media, and the only thing we could do is be heard. Donald Trump is a businessman, and that is what he is best at doing- running businesses- but if his team of politicians can be made aware of the things the people stress, then change can still be made.
I don’t believe Martin Luther King’s “dream” would change because the issue of racism hasn’t been solved. Minorities in America will always be fighting for racial equality, and one of the biggest fronts our nation could put up is that we are racially united, because no matter what year it is, it feels as if things are getting worst, and people are even more divided. They say that history repeats itself, and the most annoying thing in the world for me is to see the same things we fought for in the 20-50’s reincarnated as a new problem, and a new tribulation to fight through.
My dream is that this nation- since ‘the whole world’ may be a longshot- will find peace and equality. These are two separate aspirations. Peace, because there is so much tension between race currently, and there are places in America that are just so violent and hostile, and no one is doing effective work to bring outward change. I know things can’t happen overnight but even slow progress would be good. As for equality I can only dream that as a black women I’ll be able to succeed in my field of work as a white man could, or even a white woman. My race and my gender are major setbacks and if people saw me as a person before a black person, or a women maybe I will have an equal chance to succeed. I’m not playing the victim, I’m being honest and real, because that’s life but I’m not ready to just deal with it. The next four years can affect my life in any way and I’m not really sure how it will, but because Donald Trump is so unpredictable, I’m not really sure what’s in store for me, so I can only hope for the best.
Quite frankly, I try to avoid political discussions or any other political-related topics at all times. I do not engage myself to politics as much as I am supposed to. Aside from religion, politics is another topic that has the power to destroy any relationships; it doesn’t matter how you are related, how long you’ve known each other, or how strong the foundation of your relationship is because the possible destruction is pretty high. Honestly, on the recent political campaign for presidency, I only knew the basics. I knew that Trump is a Republican candidate and a racist. He wants to build a “wall” - which I believe isn’t literally a big wall, but more like a political and social wall – that will restraint the U.S. from building a connection or relationship with Mexico. I knew that Clinton is a Democrat that performed, and probably is still performing many illegal transactions. But that’s about it. That is all I know – at least that’s what I believe.
ReplyDeleteAfter Trump’s inauguration yesterday, there are a lot of pouring emotions; half of our country feels secured and happy, while half feels devastated and hopeless. Certainly, there are also people like me who are just starting to feel that the reality had finally kicked in. A realization that there will be a new leader in our country. A leader who has a different perception and plans for the United States that could change the country for the better or for worse. From what I see, there are full of uncertainties about what America will be like in the next couple of years, and a maybe tinge of hope that maybe it would not be as bad as expected.
Our world has reached a point where we do not have to deal with racism as much as when Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive. Yes, there is still racism (Trump for example), but I don’t think it will be something Martin Luther King would dream of for today. If he was alive, most probably he would dream of world peace. There are wars in Iraq and Iran, multiple terrorist attacks, a heartless and greedy ISIS, China taking over lands in Asia, and more corruption. We have a world full of crisis!
I have a dream that someday that ALL children in the world will receive education. I have a dream that someday there will no longer be people living in the streets. I have a dream that someday there will be cure for cancer and other incurable diseases. I have a dream that tomorrow will be better and peaceful.
There are things that we cannot predict and one of them is what the next four years will bring us. I believe that the only thing we could do as citizens is to voice out our concerns, do something about it, and hope for the best.
President-elect, Donald J. Trump, officially became the president of the United States on Inauguration Day. The reactions of viewers were indisputably multifarious. Either being jubilant over the new president’s inauguration or deeply saddened as Michelle Obama was, Donald Trump became the official 45th president of the U.S. The policies, the treaties, the alliances, etc. that President Trump will enact in the upcoming future may be for the good of the nation or for its worse. Only time will tell. The future, however, isn’t as bleak as people deem it to be. President Trump made a promise that will insure a firm alliance with Russia. That’s one problem solved or going to be solved by the new president. Other nations’ leaders voiced their views on the inauguration of the president. While some voiced concern, most nations gave congratulations for the POTUS. Although congratulations were given, the question of how much of those were sincere remains.
ReplyDeleteA leader in the Civil Rights Movement, Martin Luther King Jr. can be described as a visionary. He had a vision of equal civil liberties for all races. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, MLK delivered his “I Have a Dream” speech among 250,000 people. He was beaten and imprisoned for his dream. However, he never stopped pursuing his dream. And his dream finally became a reality. Almost. Although minorities gained education, equal rights, a position of power in the government, etc., minorities still face problems. Economically disadvantaged, although there are some exceptions, compared to the white population and still discriminated upon. There is still a long distance to go until King’s dream comes true.
My “American Dream” is for equality. I feel discriminated against so many times during my lifetime in the United States. Not just in the U.S. did I felt discriminated against but in the U.K. as well. During one of my summer visits to the country, there was a party of people that went into the British army during the same year as my Dad. Considering the fact that the people in attendance were Nepalese and that the Nepalese people are very helpful to the British people, a couple of british kids were being a pissant. My friend and I were taking a picture outside and with the vast amount of photography devices that we had to use, we put some of them on the ground to clear our hands. And these two Brits rode their bikes right next to these costly devices. Not just once but several times, We asked them to stop but they wouldn’t listen. And to make matters worse, instead of telling them to stop, their parents laughed at the whole ordeal. My friend and I were on the verge of a massacre. But we had to hold it in for the reason that the British government would take the side of the kids because they were the same race as the government officials, as would the American government. Although we would be in the wrong, we would have the justification of being provoked. However, that claim would be shot down. For this event in history, I wish for equality in the world. For equality to happen in the world, one nation has to take action. For the next four years, America will not be the nation to do so. Not with the racist bigot in office.
If Dr. King were still alive today, I believe that he wouldn't be angry at the way history played out, but surprised instead. I believe that even though he had worked endlessly to reverse the hatred and discrimination in America, he knew somewhere deep down that he had merely scratched the surface of the problem. In today's society, it is an "improvement" from the time that Dr. King lived in. We erased segregation. However, the core of the issue is still alive and well. Today, people still get racially profiled, stereotyped, and even discriminated against. Language that used to be offensive to entire communities are now used in everyday language as slang. American society has just become too desensitized to realize that it is digressing. We thought we had woken up from the horrors of the past only to find out that the alarm is still ringing.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Dr. King's dream would be slightly different than before. He isn't fighting a society that actively discriminates, segregates, and mistreats certain ethnic groups. He is fighting a society that has lost its sense of direction. He is fighting for everyone to wake up with open minds and open hearts. Without the two, America would still be stuck as a desensitized, selfish, callous nation. We would never care enough about others to have sympathy or empathy and we would never think before we act.
My own dream is that everyone would wake up. The scars of the past have not yet entirely healed for some, and America has the guts to ignore them. If people would stop for a second and see how their words and actions affected other people, society would stop digressing and start moving in a positive direction again.
The next four years will either be a complete success or a complete bust. There is no in between, not with how social media and the press handles it. I know a lot of people who put their hope in Trump because he is the first president in a long time who actually seems like he could change Washington, for better or for worse. However, I know better. It's actually pretty funny. If we have a bad four years, the public blames the president for everything that went wrong. If the four years are a huge success, they praise the president's genius and ingenuity. The problem is, the president actually doesn't control it at all. Congress does. The president has no say in what happens in Congress, and neither does the VP. Congress is the one who passes all the laws, suggests new ones, and maintains America. Sure, Trump can talk as loud as he wants, but as long as Congress ignores him, his words become wind. Trump is just as important, however. HE is the face of the government to the American masses, which is why he gets all the bulls**t thrown in his face. His actions dictate how the next four years play out. And if he keeps making waves, America will make waves back.
Before, Trump was running in the election to become president, I never payed attention to politics because I didn’t care about it. However, now I think I do need to care. I remember when Trump was elected as president and on snapchat I saw two white boys from Buena swinging the confederated flag. The first thing that came to my mind was “Damn, I wonder what the South is like right now.” Ever since then, I decided that I am never going to Beuna or the South without a white man on my arm. With Trumps inauguration there are protests all over America and I woke up with the news on and the reporter said that a lot of Americans are scared that this country will be going in the wrong direction and I agree with them.
ReplyDeleteIf MLK was alive today, he will be unbelievably proud to see how far we have came and accomplished. “I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood” and “I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” These dreams are accomplished because whites and minorities all go to school together, work together, they are allowed to marry and there are bi racial children running around left and right. “I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice” according to ABC news “Until February 7, 2013, the state of Mississippi had never submitted the required documentation to ratify the Thirteenth Amendment”. Therefore, in 2013 Mississippi officially abolished slavery.
Although, most of his dream has been accomplished, if MLK was still alive today he will have the same dream. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character” There are many stereotypes for black people. For example, black men are dead beat fathers, black people love watermelon and fried chicken (insert eyeroll here) or black people are more likely to commit a crime. These stereotypes affect how people act around us and if white parents want their children(s) to date us.
My dream :
Racism is learned behavior. Therefore, I have a dream that parents will tell their children this is my beliefs towards this particular race, but you don’t have to believe it yourself. I wish for them to tell their children that they want them to develop their OWN opinion and not develop an opinion that they THINK they should have.
I have a dream that this world will gain respect towards everyone. Regardless, if you disagree with their opinions or actions. Regardless, if you dislike them. You need to respect them.
I have a dream that black people will come together. I have seen on social media #teamlightskin and #teamdarkskin as if it's a competition. As if one completion is better than the other. When at the end of the day yall are both black and need to stick together.
The next four years will have tension, but Trump doesn’t have enough power to make America go in the wrong direction.
The current events that have prospered through the past couple days will go down in history as an historic stamp. We have people that support Trump come out and attend the inauguration at record setting lows. We had mass riots and protests that will go down as some of the most powerful of all time. And then we had a women's rights movement, that can and will completely change the way that women are viewed in a world with so much and and misogynistic views. We have seen mass separation in our world. Mass racism and extreme fascist. Martin Luther King, the most influential African American civil rights activist, who tried to change the world of its hate and racist past and turn it into new beginnings I say would be disappointed. His dream would still be a dream. Although, yes there has been significant progression in equal rights, there is no lying that this world has become more and more distant from each other, and discrimination is still very prevalent. Martin Luther King’s dream would be somewhat the exact same. African Americans brutally murdered for no reason, arrested for no reason. His dream would keep everyone together. Make a less divided nation, a nation that is seen without any type of racial profiling. But we have to make that happen by coming together.
ReplyDeleteThe 45th president of the United States is Donald Trump. Businessman and TV personality turn the most influential man with the most powerful spot in the country. Our country is divided, and many fear what president Trump can do to help that. I fear it too. Trump has not made it a priority to help racial profiling and discrimination in this world. I personally need to give him a chance. As a country there is not much we can do now. He Talked poorly about women, he makes it a priority to get illegals out of our country and he seems to be attracted to his daughter. But with him in office for 4 years there has to be change if he wants the country to come together. Our country over the past couple years have been so distant and separated that In order for there to be change he has to make it happen.
I Have A Dream, that one day people will learn to love and accept people for who they are, not by the color of their skin, the ethnicity or cultures of their families, the sexuality of one's preference, or the goals of someone trying to achieve something. I Have A Dream, that our country can provide wealth to our police men and teachers and that our soldiers that risk their lives for us can be protected from poverty and given good healthcare. I Have A Dream, that one day ignorance will be wiped off of the earth and that everyone will be open to change, not just in politics but in ourselves and the ones that we love. We can sit here and bash Trump for the rest of his time as president, but what I hope we can do is support him. Make sure that instead of going against our country start to embrace what the new change of power is. no , Trump will never stop having racist views, he will not start to respect the struggle that immigrants go through, and he will never learn his proper respect for women, but what we need to do as a country is come together and support him. Instead of wanting to see him fail, try to want him to succeed. My dream may not even be affected in the next four years, but if the people come together and he can put aside racism and misogyny, our country and people will have extreme success and love.
It's not my intention, believe me, but everything that I say in this blog post is probably going to piss someone off. Sorry in advance.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that yesterday I heard Martin Luther King Jr. roll in his grave. His dream was that blacks and whites would come together as one, celebrating our union and our equality. And the inauguration of Donald Trump on the 20th is a prime example of regression from the ideas that MLK tried to hard to push us toward. There is nothing that I could have done for this presidential elect. I am too young, too powerless, too "naive" to have any say in this country. If I could have done something to prevent Trump from winning this election, I would have. However, since I couldn't, and he is our president, as much as I despise him as a person, I am rooting for him, because he is the leader of our country, and to wish to see him fail would only be wishing failure for us all. However, the support that Trump has nationwide blows my mind. His supporters seem to be supporting a team who goes directly against what they believe in more. And seeing his president makes me just as mad as it made a lot of people when Obama was elected into office. But when I look at both sides, I realized this: I don't support Trump because he is racist. They didn't support Obama because they were. And I understand that there are more factors that play into each side. But through Trump's election, suddenly, racism is okay. Our president stood in front of 6 billion people and said "I'm racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, and proud. You can be too," and that's the same man who won.
Martin Luther King Jr. would feel like he was back at square one if he were here today, because as Trump went through the election process, gave his speeches, said what he said, he brought forth the majority of our population that was not only capable of stomaching the ideas that Trump openly voiced, but could support them. He brought forth all the people that are still stuck in a mind set of an earlier time. I don't blame Trump for what is happening between the people of this nation. I don't support him, or his beliefs. But he isn't the man who made a chunk of this country racist. That, we did by ourselves. As much as I hate Trump, I am hoping for his success. As much as I hate Trump, and the fact that he brought all these feelings and truths about the American people forward, I'm happy that now, I know.
Although he could have a lot of dreams that relate to this day and age, I don't think his dream would change. Not because there aren't bigger problems, but because it is one that still needs, desperately, to be solved. We can't make clinically crazy people less crazy. We can't solve the hostility between countries, or the debts we owe. But, as members of the Oakcrest community, we do know that introducing people to a kinder, more equal way of thinking is possible. We know that spreading the love between race, ethnicity, religion, and everything in between is something that can be accomplished because we've done it right here at home. And I think that MLK knew that, and still would.
I have a dream that ALL men and woman are equal; that women make the same dollar that men make. That women get the same jobs that men get. That women play the same roles in society that men play. That women are viewed as just as stronger as men are. That gender roles tarnish. That we are one.
DeleteI have a dream that we, as teenagers, can bring home a black or white, boy or girl. That we can like what we like and be accepted for it. That we can make our own decisions and be who we choose to be. That we can be with who makes us happy. That we are one.
I have a dream that racism is no longer taught, and forgotten. That we begin to make a change one generation at a time. That me and my peers will be able to rise up and make that difference. That we are one.
I have a dream that when my mom walks into a room, they don't assume that she belongs to a different kid. That it becomes status quo for a white woman to belong to a black kid, or a black man to belong to anyone. That we are one.
I have a dream that stereotypes die. That saying someone acts more "black" than the person next to them someone comes with a bad connotation, or that saying someone acts more "white" than another somehow means they're more educated. That we are one.
The next four years, because of what Trump's supporters are actually standing for, will bring us apart, and there's very little that I can do to bring anything back together, for I am only 17 years old. My words, useless in society, my efforts destined to remain unknown. But I'm hoping, as I said in my dream, that my generation can be that difference within the next four years that can make that change.
The inauguration of our new president either means the start of a greater America to some or the start of a tougher fight to others. Many people seem to agree with almost all of the statements that he's made or saw him as the lesser of two evils, but that means many battles will have to be fought even harder. The rights of immigrants, the rights of women, the rights of LGBTQ+, the rights of black Americans, the fight against global warming, the fight against poverty, the fight against various diseases, the fight for better public education are all endangered.
ReplyDeleteDr. King focused on nonviolent protests, civil rights, and poverty when he was alive. If he were still living today, he wouldn't necessarily change his dreams, but he would focus on including other rights issues, instead of just black civil rights, such as women’s and immigrants’. He would approve of the progress that we've made, even though it seems like everything has gotten worse. The media portrays the world as if it's foundering because all they report is bad news. But people forget that it has brought awareness to many problems, such as police brutality, especially against young black men. Many people also aren't aware about the fact that poverty rates throughout the world have dropped. However, while we talk about the abuse that black men receive, we rarely ever hear about the sexual abuse that black women get from the police. Dr. King would never be content with this world because there will always be more work to be done.
I have a dream that women aren’t seen as the same as men, but equal as them. Both genders have something different to contribute and everyone deserves respect for how hard they’ve worked. Women aren’t just some things that are supposed to be conquered and mounted.
I have a dream that all types of immigrants will be welcomed into this country. Throughout history, there has always been a fear of foreigners: Chinese, Mexican, Middle Eastern. The “natives” say that they were there first, so the new people don’t belong. If they truly cared, they would share the love. They make up lies, like “they’re stealing *our* jobs”, to scare people. People who live in this society don’t realize how hard life is in underdeveloped countries.
I have a dream that we will rely on sources of energy other than oil and coal. We kill and take so much just for these two deleterious resources, which will soon be depleted. The American government allows people to be killed in the Middle East because it means more oil and cheaper prices for us. Companies take land that has already been claimed just for profits (I mean, people do a lot of things for money, but still.) We pollute everything (the ground, the water, the air) with them.
I’m afraid of what’s going to happen in the next few years. I don’t know what promises the President will actually keep from his campaign and I don’t know what his appointees are going to do in their new positions. All I know is that things are going to be a lot different and I will do as much as I can to make sure that we don’t take a step backward.
The day that this blog response was posted was Sunday, January 22nd, 2017. The presidential reign of Barack Obama has officially come to an end and the new presidential reign of Donald Trump has been official for two days. And during these past two days, President Trump, along with his Republican cabinet, have done everything to eradicate any past presence of Barack Obama including eliminating ‘some parts’ of Obamacare, and increasing mortgage for first time house owners. The United States of America is seen around the world as the superior country and now other countries laugh at us. We as Americans have to ask ourselves: How have we gone from a African American, controversial free president to a racist, xenophobic, misogynistic white president? Apparently, we the people of the United States are not as awake as we say we are because not just in a span of two days, not ever since Donald Trump announced he was running for president, but for years now, we as a society have been walking a straight line showing no sign of improvement. This blog centers around Martin Luther King Jr. If he was still alive to this day, he would be terrified because all of his work as a civil rights leader, his dream of equality for all would is still not complete.
ReplyDeleteOur society is split into two groups; the people who understand this current generation we all live in and teach their kids to believe that all humans, black women, white women, black men and white men, Latinos and Latinas, Asians and Muslims, homosexuals, lesbians, and transsexuals should all be treated as equals. But one of the problems in this country are the people, mostly past generations, who can't grasp the idea that society is trying to transition into a new era of equality for all. So instead, they teach their kids the way they were taught: that the man is the superior species and no woman or anyone in between should oppose that. On Election Day, the American people had a choice of who to pick: continue to improve our society and continue down the path of equality for all or digress and go back to a old fashioned way of looking at society. We the people of the United States of America decided to look at society in a old fashioned way and now there are Americans who are basically fighting for their lives now. The dream that Martin Luther King had is starting to become a past thought again. Knowing King though, his dream wouldn't change for the world because it just means he still has work that needs to be completed. But snap back to reality and King isn't alive and it is our job as Americans to finish what he started. Not just the job of civil right leaders like John Lewis, but every single last American who believes in equality for all, to help defeat misogynistic assholes like President Trump.
Just last night, me, my sister and my mom had a serious discussion about women's rights and the purpose of the Women's March across the world. That discussion ended with me having a mental breakdown because of how worried I am for not only the future of this country, but me and my family’s future. Politics up till this point haven't been a serious problem for me because Barack Obama has been my president for all basically my whole adolescent life. And now, I have to head into college with a republican like Donald Trump as president and a house of Republicans backing him up? That is scary. And I'm not even a woman. And it should be ALL women, of ALL ages, terrified for their lives right now. Because most Americans already couldn't afford healthcare, Obamacare was their support. And now that Trump is trying to eliminate that, and have everyone work for their lives, which some can't, is amazing to me. My problem is that this is not who we should be as a country. Donald Trump is not the man who should represent this current generation. I dream of a country where women can have equal human rights and will no longer be thought as the weak species. I dream of members of the LGBT community, Muslims, Asians, Latinos and Latinas, African Americans and Caucasians joining hands in search for equality. To officially nullify the idea that the white man is superior to all. This dream world of mine who be difficult to picture for the next four years. But the best I can do is educate people on the problems of this country and help all during this tough time. We the people of the a United States are all we got. We have to join together as a nation to beat this.

DeleteYes, his dream would be broader. Instead of his dream being specifically about Blacks and Whites, his dream would include reparations for gender equality, religion, and stereotyping. As soon as gender equality becomes less of an issue, major setbacks occur. Ever since the ISIS attacks began, the majority links ISIS with ALL muslims. This is aso where religion and stereotyping intertwine. Stereotyping is offensive to many people, and it is just as big of an issue as the many other things.
ReplyDeleteI Have a Dream that people will not be made fun of for the way that they look, they will not be ashamed of their nationality, religion or sexual orientation and we will become united. I know so many people that get bullied or made fun of constantly. Many people in Oakcrest do not have any manners or the slightest amount of respect for others around them. They go about their business unconcerned about others. I want a world that shames bullie, not encourages them. As for the next four years: I am uncertain of how the next four years will be. I do not know what to expect. I have no idea. All I know is that my dream will certainly not be accomplished.
Dr.King is a huge figure in American History not necessarily for what he achieved but how he achieved it. A lot of people remember Dr.King for his leading role in the Civil Rights Movement but too many disregard the peaceful methods he used. His tactics of spreading love instead of hateful rebuttals are what made this man one of, if not the greatest, American leaders. Without his kindness, the world would look a whole lot different today. Another key figure that could have offered an unfavorable outcome, if not for Dr.King, would be Malcolm X. Both men were fighting the right cause but Malcolm X’s methods fueled violence versus putting it out. Malcolm X did not work to mend the apartheid, only to control and change it. Dr.King’s focus was equality and peace while Malcolm’s visions were influenced by power in the shadows. Knowing this, Malcolm X would probably be ecstatic in ways are protesting today while Dr.King would be torn. Dr.King wants to destroy inequality but not at the cost of his other morals.Dr.King’s dream might have focused on black inequality in the text, though the true message behind it was against all forms of injustice so his message would be similar today. From the comments of our leader to extreme actions of protesters, I would say we are more divided than ever; which is not what Dr.King wanted. He dreamed that “little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” which seems like this will change from a reality today to again a dream in the future. Trump has opened the gates for racist, sexist, and such to speak their minds without worry of public scrutiny. On the other hand, large amounts of extremists (keyword extremists) in groups like Black Live Matter support the same types of behavior just for their own causes. Denying to serve someone at a restaurant for their skin color is just as bad as denying them for their decision to dedicate their life to serving the people through being a police officer. The entire problem is based on equality so why is that we feel the need to strip others in order to support our own causes? This is something Dr.King would never approve of.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream…
I have a dream that my kids won’t see people for their skin color, their sexual orientation, but see them as people. I dream that people won't be forced to choose a side like they are today. You’re racist or a cop hater, sexist or a child killer, it’s things like these that hold back our progress. I might not side with the police with everything that has happened but I’m not going to turn my back to them because of a few. I’m a pro-life supporter but I wouldn’t take away abortions simply because it would be ineffective in lowering abortions while also increases patient mortality. My beliefs put me into a situation where people see that I don’t fully agree with their views so they automatically assume I’m the opposite of them. We’re are never going to totally agree as a population but real life isn’t black and white. We need to come together in a peaceful and mature way compared to the disgraceful manner in which we treat other people. I’m not saying you have to agree with our new president or believe in more than two genders but we all need to check our pride before we continue down a path with an ugly ending for all. Don’t like the new president? Don’t harass people who do while also trying to change what is probably the most unchangeable thing in our government. Instead of waiting to bandage a wound try to prevent the wound entirely. Help change how we elect our government positions. Don’t think gays should be able to marry? The first problem that we must answer is “Why does this affect you in the first place?”. Others happiness won’t alter a single part of your life unless you cause it to. If we as people begin to solve our problems like the examples above then we will stop seeing enemies and start seeing misapprehension. This is the first key to accomplishing what I, as well as Dr.King, dream of; Equality.
The American inauguration. What does it truly mean to the people of the United States? For most people I believe it symbolizes change. But when it came down to this inauguration a majority of people thought it was going to be a bad one. A lot of angry, frustrated, and disappointed people protested about the concept of Donald Trump being elected and inaugurated as president. While most people did this some people thought the opposite saying Trump would be a good fit in office. Well the only thing us Americans can do know is just sit back and see what happens.
ReplyDeleteMany people think of Donald Trump and an arrogant, racist, women hater and in today's society we can see why a lot of people hate him. In the world we live in today minorities and other people are still being discriminated because of their so called lower status to other people. Thinking about this subject and relating it back to MLK in the 60's it really seems kinda like the same thing. If Dr. King were alive on this day today I believe that he would keep similar ideals to the ones he used to have but he would expand on the range of people he would be talking about including not just blacks but any other person being discriminated.
Dr. King would use this idea because back then other minorities were able to slip out of range from racism because of the constant hate towards black people. Now a broader range of people are taking heat including women which is terrible. I believe Dr. King would use these ideas to create a better more peaceful environment for people.
If I had to come up with my own dream it would be "I have a dream that one day this world will see that everyone deserves the peacefulness and right to live in harmony without be discriminated". This is truly the American dream. To not be pushed back from any opportunities just because of how you look. This dream could be affected in the next four years do to Trump and his wall but who knows we just have to wait and see.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King were alive today, I believe his dream would be the same. I believe he would be happy with our Nation today, and our new president, Donald Trump. Not that our Nation is perfect, because it never will be and a lot of people need to realize that. Dr. King would be happy with the progress, the progress we’ve made in equality and limitation. We have equality, we have everything we need but somehow can’t piece it together and that’s okay. We will never take a step back in equality. There will always be racism, there will always be disgusting mouths that say the most horrifying, judgemental things. Racism isn’t a “thing” it is a mindset, all it takes is one person. The point being, those “people” are starting to be more and more rare. But the progress we’ve made as a Nation is absolutely astounding. The progress we’ve made in limitation is the fact that there are no limitations! We have the power to change the world just as we see it, and it can be done. Dr. King is a prime example of that. For that is why I think he would be proud.
My own dream of the future of the world? I just hope we as a Nation keep moving forward. I personally, don’t particularly like to think about the future because it hasn’t come yet. I like to think that I’ll worry about it when it gets here. I don’t really have one big dream for the future, just other than for everything and everyone to keep moving forward and to make the best out of it, differences aside.
I have a dream.
I have a dream that everyone will put their dreams into action so that dreams are no longer dreams, dreams, for one, will become a reality.
I have a dream that those who don’t see the light of day will find it, in addition to looking at the bright side of every situation, having patience.
I have a dream that all will put aside their differences and come together as a Nation to conquer all and make a real difference.
I have a dream that one day the people of our Nation will realize it’s not one specific person or one group of people who make a change, we, we are the ones who make change.
I have a dream that we will all have faith in humanity.
This is my dream.
The possible impact the next four years will have on my dream is possible. Just possible. Our new president whom I expect great things from does not affect my dream. The government does not affect my dream. No certain person or group of people affect my dream! Every person in this Nation affects my dream, it is us who really changes things for the better. One person can enforce it, but everyone has to commit and follow it. Dr. King enforced his dream of equality, but he did not force or threaten with consequence. We the people listened and created the real difference.
The inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th president of the United States has brought about mixed feelings within the country. Some are scared, some are happy, some are sad, and some are confused. I feel like the country is becoming more and more divided and this is not how it should be. We should be coming together as one and support our new president. I understand that as a person he is not the best to look up to because of his racism, disrespect for women, and the other terrible things that he has done and said. If we wish for our president to fail, then we as people will fail and be in for a disaster. You have to give him a chance and see what he can do before we start to panic. I know it can be scary not knowing what’s next because I always feel this way too. I like knowing what the future plans are and I always think ahead. With the new president though, we must wait and see what happens over time. I understand all the protests and riots, but it’s tough to see the nation divided like this. I understand people’s hate and anger for Donald Trump because it is very hard to look past all the terrible things that he has said and done. I know for a fact that Martin Luther King Jr. would be disappointed to see us select a president that stands for what he does. We will just have to wait and see what he does, but for right now I just want to see what will happen. I’m disappointed that the presidential choices have come down to what they have, but I am uneasy about the future and that’s not a feeling I enjoy having.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today, I think that his dream would be mostly the same. He would still want all races to be treated equal, have the same rights, and opportunities. He would also want people to stop being discriminated against because of the color of their skin, Religion, sexuality, or gender. Dr. King would go about this in a peaceful manner and want a less divided nation. He would find it very disappointing that people are being killed, discriminated against, and look down upon for those reasons. He would try as hard as he could to get everyone to come together. At this time, it would be very helpful to have such a powerful speaker like him to shift some of the corrupt mindsets throughout the nation that discriminate against people.
I have a dream that one day there will be unity in a nation that has become more and more divided by the minute.
I have a dream that one day people will accept others for who they are and not judge them because of their skin color, Religion, gender, or sexuality.
I have a dream that one day we that there will be peace among nations.
I have dream that one day people who deserve better will given what they deserve.
The next four years cannot be predicted by me and this makes me mad. I don’t what will happen and I don’t think anyone really does. How can you predict the actions of Donald Trump? My dreams will be hard to accomplish, but one day they could be possible. They seem impossible, but you never know what could happen. A world with all my dreams seems too good to be true. In the next four years, it’s is going to take a huge change in people to accomplish them.

ReplyDeleteUnlike my beautiful and intelligent peers, I am comfortable about talking politics. Is it my absolute favorite thing to talk about? Hell no. However, if the conversation comes up, I will not walk away. I make it clear to my elders that my generation is not oblivious to what’s going on and that our opinion matters because we are the future. I make it clear that I am not the one to beat around the bush and talk about butterflies and rainbows in place of war. I make it clear that this is OUR future that they voted for. I make it clear that they put our future in the hands of someone who will make our lives hell.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I think Dr. King would just want us to give Trump a chance. Dr. King gave a whole damn speech about accepting each other, he did not get murdered for you assholes to post pictures of your white girl, don’t @ me. In all seriousness though, Dr. King’s speech would be emphasized to stand united through a hard time and he would want us to teach ourselves to love rather than hate. He would want us to fight together as a unit to conquer those with exclusive mindsets, such as our President. However, I truly believe he would be disappointed in us. He would be disappointed in us because we let police brutality get this far. We let race get between us, again. We stepped back five decades to let a misogynic man become our president and a homophobic broad become our VP. He would be disappointed that we are letting people like Brock Turner and Mark Zimmerman walk the streets free while many of our black brothers and sisters such as Tamir Rice and Sandra Bland are in the ground, chained to their innocence that can no longer be proven.
I have a dream that LGBT youth will feel safe rather than scared. Conversion Therapy is banned EVERYWEHERE. No more bullying because a boy likes flower crowns and a small girl likes her hair short. LGBT youth can come out without fearing their religious parents. I have a dream where kids don’t need to come out and our future generation can come home with their significant other of any gender and no questions are asked. Just love and acceptance.
I have a dream where women are equal to men. Not higher than men, not lower; equal. EQUAL. One more time for those who didn’t get it the first two: E-Q-U-A-L. We should be treated with respect regardless of what job we hold. It’s okay if girls want to be engineers. It’s okay if boys want to stay home and take care of the kids. It’s okay if both are scientists, models, janitors. We should be held to the same standard, we all have something that contributes to the position they hold.
I have a dream where this nation is at peace. Equilibrium. No riots. No wars. No debt. No hate. We learn to coexist with one another so our brothers and sisters of all races are not killed for hateful reasons. Everyone is welcomed no matter what. We learn to love our girls hijabs and boys in uniform. We live at peace and learn to resolve our problems without violence.
I have a dream where we respect everyone, regardless of race. Native Americans are precious to our nation and we need to give them more respect. People with broken English are learning because they want to fit in with us. They are not stealing our jobs, they are simply taking the ones nobody wants. When opportunity comes knocking, you have to take it.
On Thursday night, Troye Sivan released his music video to his song ‘Heaven’. The video showcased how far we have come for LGBT issues. I cried happy tears. Because I remember when my mom texted me saying that she could get married now. But soon I cried for a different reason. I cried because we let ourselves elect two homophobic bigots, one emphasizing his desire to legalize Conversion Therapy. We have come along way. And to let someone tear us down like that because of his power is sickening. These four years are going to be my worst enemy; but I’m not going down without a fight.
I misspelled everywhere my apologies
DeleteDr. Martin Luther King lived in a heavily segregated era of USA history, and still dreamed of equality, so I’m positive that in today’s world, his dream would still be alive. I don’t see why his dream would change. If he could see a future of peace in the 50’s and 60’s, why wouldn’t he be able to see it now, in a more diverse America? Yes times are bad, and division is everywhere, but there is no denying we have made progress from Dr. Kings era. The only different component in Dr. Kings dream, would be his way to fulfil it. I don’t doubt that he would still use non violent tactics, but his campaign would definitely be associated with media platforms. Dr. King use to educate and free his mind with letters, books, and speeches. Imagine if he could tweet, post, and mass distribute his articles? You also have to remember that in order for non violent protests to work, there must be the bare minimum of violent protests, which is the problem today. Although 99.9% of BLM protestors are peaceful and just want a resolution to the race relation issues, there’s the .1% that loot stores and vandalize people’s property, and then get labeled as the face of the BLM movement. If Dr. King was here, I truly believe he would find a way to control the looters and the vandals, and make the face of the protests peaceful.
ReplyDeleteMy dream is that when I tell my friends I go to Oakcrest, they don’t associate the school with violence and drugs and savages, because our school is extremely diverse. My dream is that when kids hear about Oakcrest, they see a mix of beautiful cultures, colors, and upbringings, with a variety of information that can be learned simply from conversing with a classmate. My dream is that I can have another black president, without getting the opposite of everything he stood for, sworn in the next inauguration. My dream is that one day, white people will realize that minorities getting scholarships because they’re black, isn’t unfair. My dream is that one day we can say “why does race even matter” without being ignorant, because 99% of the time today, only old white males say that in response to a video of a young black teen walking home from school, but never made it home because he was wrongly gunned down by a police officer. Maybe in the next four years, things will get worse...and then get better. The only hope I have at this point is that Trump exploits systematic racism so much, it no longer is deniable. From that point forward, maybe we’ll be able to build once again. Just maybe.
I believe Martin Luther King’s dream would have definitely changed if he were alive today. Logically speaking, we have come a long way when it comes to equality between the races. Segregation is no longer a real thing, and most of the white population do not actually hate colored people anymore. King lived in a time where it was really risky for him to just go out and speak, let alone do anything without being in danger. Times have changed, but I still believe King still would have a dream. A lot of people still have prejudice, or misgivings about other people of other cultures or races. I think King would preach a message of love, appreciation, and understanding. I think King would feel like there is more work to be done. King’s new dream would be for all of mankind to understand one another, and to love one another. My dream for the future of the world is simple. I would love for the ultimate blending. I would love if everyone in the world could come to understand each other, as well as having greater compassion. World peace would become an achievable goal.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream, that one day the people of this nation will finally band together as one. As a nation, we cannot progress if we are divided. Throughout the entire history of our nation, we have been emotionally, physically, and mentally divided. If we are supposed to be a great nation, we need to act like one.
I have a dream, that one day the people of the world will come to know great compassion. With great compassion, comes great understanding. Great understanding brings long-lasting peace. If we can achieve peace, anything’s possible.
I feel like these next four years will not be the end of the world, only a minor setback. Sure we have a president who seems to be the opposite of what King was, but our country is older than 200 years. I think we can weather out 4.
If Dr. King was alive today, I believe that he would be very proud of how far we have gotten as a country. Dr. King always wished for equality in the country which is something we have achieved very well in this country. We have no segregation at all in our country and anybody can come and live in America with equal opportunities. I do agree that there is still racism in our country but it is not nearly as bad as it was back then during Dr. King's time. Due to this Dr. King's ideals and views would still be the same. Racism is something that is very hard to get rid of no matter what because we can't control how people think which is something that Dr. King would understand. People now think we are going back in time because of our new President comparing him to Hitler and his views to fascism. All of that is very ridiculous to me and I don't think President Trump is bringing us back in time but is trying to move forward. His idea of a wall to me is nothing more then a way to keep out illegal immigrants who want to come here and cause trouble. There are plenty of illegal immigrants who come to this country doing illegal stuff and end up killing someone at times. He wants to keep the country equal and diverse as long as you come here legally. This is a great country to be in right now even if you think there is still racism in our country because it is better then living in areas in the middle east filled with ISIS members.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream that one day people can stand united and not see people by what the look like or what they believe in but on their actions in this lifetime. No matter the skin color you have, the sexual orientation you are and the religion you practice we should all still unite as human beings to solve all of our problems together. This kind of dream is something nearly impossible to reach due to it basically being the perfect Utopia but we can try to get as close as possible.
The next four years to me will be very interesting now that our next president is Donald Trump. I am a Trump supporter on my part and I am still very baffled that Donald Trump, a business man, is our next president. But I do believe that the next four years will be not as bad as people think it will be. I am hoping these four years will be life changing for me in a very good way but will not achieve my dream though.
It’s sad to say but the fact that Donald Trump is now our president for the next 4 years, it’s considered to be one of the best things in this world for a lot of people. To be honest, it may sound ignorant but I’m to the point where I really don’t care. But, only because there’s nothing I can really do about it. My generation is what the world depends on to make a change, and no one is strong enough to even try. People are praying and hoping that Donald Trump fails, but why? If he fails, we fail as a country and that doesn’t sound good to me. Beings though that Donald Trump is a business man who knows nothing of what he is doing as the President of the United States, I know for a fact that he isn’t going to make it, or at least that’s what I want to believe. But I do not want him to fail, because those are two different things. Most of the powerful things he says he is going to do will NOT be done. It is unrealistic and that’s what makes him sound and look like a goof ball.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King were alive today I think his dream would be the same, with a little more added on. I believe that It would be the same because nothing has changed tremendously in my opinion. His dream was for all segregation and racism to be done. He accomplished the segregation and I think he would be very proud about it. But racism, his dream was a failure. RACISM WILL NEVER CHANGE. There’s too many sick people in this world for racism to ever change. Generation after generation is being taught to hate one another based on the color of their skin. It just doesn’t sound right to me. I never understood what could be so different about a person who has yellow skin and someone who has brown skin. There is no difference. The color of your skin doesn’t prove your intelligence nor beauty.
I also believe that Martin Luther King, Jr. would have a dream of peace. The amount of violence that has been occurring for the past couple of years is terrifying. Killing and after killing. It’s sad to say that most of it is because of racism.
I have a dream that the world will someday become smarter. When I say that I mean with decisions. People in this world must start making better decisions. For there to be peace WE as the people in our country has to make peace. For the racism to come to an end, people must stop teaching their children that it’s okay to laugh at or mistreat another child because of the color of their skin or even their background. For example, where they came from or how they live.
I have a dream that everyone will come together and just help each other. No one should be stranded, no one should be alone. Everyone should be able to help each other and make the world a better place.
The impact that the next 4 years will have on my dream will most likely turn out to be a failure. Everything that I want, Trump wants the opposite, he craves for violence. He loves people going against each other and I’m having a hard time trying to figure out why. Why is it so satisfying for the world to be full of hate? I will never understand.
This election is a wakeup call for everyone. It’s a way to let citizens know that it’s time to do something or everything will end bad. I have hope that something good will come out of this inauguration.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a brilliant man, who selflessly took a stand for the rights of the mistreated black community. He stood up for what he believed in, and in doing so, helped countless people understand that they are worth more than what people perceived them to be. He certainly changed the way blacks and some other races are treated in this day and age, but if he were still with us, he would see that he still has some work to do. He would see that even though we have broken down the walls of segregation, we have not completely expressed true equality. He would notice that we still find the color of our skin standing between us, not physically, but emotionally.
ReplyDeleteDr. King’s vision for the future is not too different from mine. I, like him, want to live in a society that is blind to black and white. A society that treats everyone equal. A society that does not see blacks as the most violent of people. A society that doesn't look at white people as racist and prejudice people. But I fear that Donald Trump taking the title of President of the United States has somewhat put a hold on that dream. If someone as prejudice and bias as Donald Trump can sway more than half of America’s vote his way then things are worse than I had previously thought. While this generation is much more tolerant than those in the past, we still sometimes judge each other, whether it be on skin color, or country of origin, or religion, it's not right. There should be no barrier between any of us, because we are all human, we all live on the same planet, we are not very different.
There are three different ways of interpreting this year’s election: 1) people who are rooting for Donald Trump 2) people who thinks the election is a complete joke or 3) people who just goes with the flow but do not have much of an opinion about the election, like me.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I do wish to voice my opinion to the people out there who are using violence to express their thoughts. As a warning beforehand, I apologize for all the profanity I have written: Okay. If it was me, I would have wished for Hillary Clinton as president over Donald Trump as well. But now that Trump is the president, you should get over it. Like what are you going to do about it since he is our new representative? Leave the country? Put the American flag on fire? Assassinate the man? You can’t do shit now. Why stress yourself over this bullshit. He already got chosen as the president and have said his inauguration speech. People are acting up in the streets by breaking windows and flipping over trash cans. What the fuck?! Get over it. Instead of trying to ruin the public areas, scaring kids to death, and creating stupid riots on the streets, try doing something that will create a positive impact. All I see are people trying to make things worse. This isn’t what Martin Luther King did when he fought for equality. He didn’t go on the streets and vandalize buildings. He didn’t go burn the American flag. He didn’t curse out the president. What he did was protest without using any violence. What he did was use his voice to persuade and convince America. And he did! Martin Luther King was not anything like the monkeys I see captured on camera today.
If Dr. King were alive today, I do believe he would have felt moved by how much America have accepted the different races. Now in the school hallways, I see different races forming relationships with one another. Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, Whites, they are all mingling together unlike the years before. Looking back to the days Dr. King was protesting for equality, I believe his goal would still be the same today, except it will not just be about the Whites and the Blacks. He would fight for other ethnic groups as well as put his support on women rights, social rights, cultural rights, and the people who are labeled as “illegal immigrants”.
I have a dream that racism would end its course. No person should have to feel sad or hurt by all the comments and actions out there who are making fun of each other’s race.
I have a dream that equality would be fulfilled. No one should be treated unfairly with one having advantages and the other with disadvantages.
I have a dream that not just the country, but also the world would be united. Wars, battles, bloodshed, no living person wishes for lives to be lost.
I have a dream that people would stop living in fear. Police brutality, terrorism, shootings, bombings, no one should have to face that.
I have a dream that people would stop living with hardships. Having multiple jobs, trying to survive living in a dog eat dog world while there are some living life to the fullest without having to ever think about earning enough money just to live to the next day; nobody should have to experience that.
I have a dream that hate and all the negative feelings would dissipate. It is because we have these emotions that there are commotions today with riots and killings and protests.
I have a dream that pollution and landfills would no longer exist. Countries like America, China, Indonesia, Japan are having a hard time dealing with pollution and smogs. And as each day passes by, the water they are drinking, the air they are breathing are becoming barely applicable.
Honestly speaking, I do not think any of what I just mentioned before would be accomplished within the next four years. But maybe some other good stuff would come out of it.
While we have made progress in the past 50 years since MLK’s revolutionary speech, we are still not all the way there yet. As long as there is a world we won’t fulfill this dream. Hate will always be present, and with that there is no chance of ultimate peace with everyone living. Evil will continue to be born into this world. Now while this sounds hopeless it is not, because as long as we have people fighting for what is right that evil will be kept on a short leash. We must continue to breed love and equality. The desire is to produce more love then hate and have that love outweigh the sin of the world. MLK’s speech would have the same desire for ultimate unity, but the goals would be different as some of the goals he preached have already been reached.
ReplyDeleteMy dream is that the love overwhelms the the hate and nullifies it. I know everyone will never love everybody, people have different views and beliefs, but all I hope for is toleration. People need to learn that hating someone for who they are will not change them, so with that being said men and women alike need to learn to just deal with others and keep their opinions to themselves. I have views based on my upbringing and beliefs, but I do not address them with people that go against my views. You may not like certain people, but that doesn’t mean you make them feel less of a human than you. Everyone is a human under the son and at the end of the day we all have to answer to God, so there is no reason to try and judge someone. We are all flawed so with that being said there is no reason for judgement. Love or at the least tolerate, that is my dream.
These next four years will not affect us as citizens of this country unless we let it. No matter who our leader is it is still our decision to live how we want and to choose between love and hate. We could have a dictator in office, but as long as we maintain the love and hope he can not tarnish who we are and how we treat people.

ReplyDeleteI believe King would be disappointed with the way people are currently being treated. There is so much injustice in this world its ridiculous. I fear that I will get to the end of my life and still not get paid as much as a man, or a female that has a different color skin than me will get treated differently. At the same time I do feel my generation carries at least some hopes in terms of equality. I believe King would direct his equality notion more towards humans in general and less of a race issue. He would include any minority. I have a dream that the world ends up being a place that I would want to bring children into. I don’t want anyone to have to struggle in life more than they might already. I usually don’t use cheesy quotes but there is a famous quote that says “Life is like an arrow, it pulls you back to shoot you towards something great.” I hope this is true. This election is pulling us back to motivate more people and push them to make a change. I pray that this is true and I do feel as though a revolution will be happening soon. It feels amazing to know that we are living in history right now. The most frustrating part is having parents that might not agree with your beliefs. A lot of parents don’t agree with their children because their children are living in a revolution. Big things are coming and there is no denying it but I do not think that Trump will do anything without repercussions from the people. He honestly might get assassinated and then we won’t have to deal with four year of him but who knows, only time will tell. I don’t like getting involved with politics or making my political beliefs heard but I do not like the fact that we have a talking orange as president. I think everyone in history besides all the white cis males would be disappointed in where we are at but not where we’re going. We have the power to change the world and we will.
If MLK were still alive today he would not be satisfied with the state of the world. MLK was a man of love and compassion. His impartial, kind soul is what drove him to have such an immense dream. Although blacks now have equal opportunity as whites, Luther dreamed of much more.
ReplyDeleteMLK dreamed of unity. He dreamed of people with minds able to see past categorizations and stereotypes. These are things that we see often see today. Even after everything our forefathers have fought for, our world is still corrupted by self-indulgent, narrow-minded ignorance.
With all that being said, the inauguration of the 45th president happened days ago. Beings though the assassination of MLK was 24 years ago, we have now molded our views to having higher standards for the president of our country. I cannot say that Martin Luther King Jr. would approve of where this country is headed. We are unsure of our future because the new president has proven his confrontational character. Time will tell what the future hold but I do not think MLK would have chosen this route for the Unites States of America. If he were alive today his dream about the future of the world would not change, he would still expect peaceful endeavors with kind words and respect for all.
My dream about the future of the world is tolerance for all. Everyone is going through the same struggles regardless of skin color or religion. I want women to be entitled to the same respect that men are. Unfortunately, we have never had a women as our president. I believe that this has alot to do with sexismn. It took many years for women to get the social standing that they have now but there are still many women who are taught that they are not as valuable as men. I believe that women are just are smart as men and their social graces make them more powerful than men. Women are still endeavoring to find their voice and I think MLK would have been proud to watch it happen. I think the fact that our new president is from a different generation is why he finds it hard to see the value in women. We have a lot of work ahead but we have reason to have hope in a brighter tomorrow.

I believe that this is a “10 steps forward, 10 steps backwards” society. If Dr. King were still alive today, I think he’d be extremely proud of some of the world’s improvements, but also upset at some of the things that have remained the same. For instance, everyone, no matter the ethnic background, is allowed to interact with one another. No more rules about one race being superior over the other, or rules that certain people can’t do certain things. It’s what Dr. King wanted, and I know it’s something he’d be happy about. Unfortunately, although segregation isn’t a thing anymore, discrimination and racism is. Dr. King would be disappointed in the fact that people who have the nerve to belittle another person because of their race, still exist.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of people belittling others because of their race, let’s talk about Donald Trump!!!! It physically hurts me to say that a person who has talked down on just about every other race, besides his own is now the President. His new position has stirred up many emotions; some are scared, some are hopeful, some have no idea what to even think! The future of our country is dependent on this man, and if I’m gonna be completely honest, I have no idea with this means, or what’s going to happen.
With that being said, to wrap everything up, my dream would be for the people of this country to remain positive. There’s tons of negativity surrounding this new presidency, and I would want nothing more than for everyone to try and have a positive outlook on everything that’s been happening.
If Dr. King was alive I think he would be very disappointed. I’m not just talking About the election; I’m talking about how people reacted to it. All the violence the “Left” has unleashed on America to destroying stores, cars, cities, and people with different thoughts. Dr. King was a righteous man who believe in non-violence protest. He did not riot to get rid of a president or wish terrible things would happen to him. A matter a fact, being the Christian man he was, he would pray. He would communicate verbally the “injustices” and his demands without even throwing a rock threw a window of some store or home that could have nothing to do with the outcome. Dr. king was a smart man who knew what he was doing and was educated in the politics and knew how to get things down successfully. I Feel like our nation has been divided more than it has been. We have made progress toward the dreams he has had since then. But we have let things get in between us to pull us apart. I don’t believe Dr. King would be a part of the Black Lives Matter movement or the movement that are throwing tantrums and breaking things. If your car is broken, and you start taking it out on the car, the problem gets worst. All these “Anti-trump” protesters are just dividing us. They are hypocritical. The other side only sees what they are doing as stupidity and loads of hate and angry with violence. You want to be angry? Go ahead. You want to protest? Go ahead. But as Dr. King has preached the violence and destruction does not solve the problem. Speak with your words not your hands. Address matters with persuasion not violence.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream that all Americans take responsibility for themselves. You are your own boss. You are held responsible for your actions and decision. If you do something or you get yourself somewhere in a tough spot, then you face the consequences and it’s on you to build yourself up
I have a dream that we become more independent than we are dependent. We rely on ourselves and never a barren to others. We earn what we want. Work hard for the things you don’t have.
I have a dream that people didn’t give a rat’s butt what other people say about them. Never concerning themselves because if it’s not true then the best thing you can do is to prove them wrong by being you.
I have a dream that the morals of people return. We all strive for the right thing and not the wrong
I have a dream that students and children would learn what truly needs to be learned. Not conformed to be a ward of the state but a ward of themselves that work to be the best they can.
I have a dream the families are brought back together and not torn apart. Having a family that is together is the norm and separation is un heard of.
If we become better as a people we will become better as a whole. It’s like Track and Field. Multiple individuals doing their own thing. They are responsible for getting themselves where they need to be and putting the work in. When you do your best in your event it benefits you and the team. So, if we become better as individual people, everything would be falling together where it should. Things would be working out for us all. Sometimes you get a new coach(president). Now you liked your old coach but he’s gone and now you have coach T. You may not like him but you must remember you both have the same interests which is the country you live in. He is on your team. And if you do your part he can do his part and the team or country can benefit from it all together.
I understand politics and why it should matter to me as someone who is going to be considered an adult soon. However, I really wish people would just deal with it. I’m black and a woman so of course I didn’t want Trump to be president. But that doesn’t mean I can’t survive through his presidency. A good amount of people didn’t wish for Trump to be president but he’s there so just try and make the best of it. If people really cared, they would have moved to Canada like so many people said they would. With the international protest the happened on the 21st, it was a good idea but is was late. The countries that have connections with America are probably panicking because their is a man in office who seems sporadic when dealing with decisions. America has one of the best militaries in the world and we are amongst the top 10 richest countries in the world. With a man as erratic as Trump in office we are sure to have many things relating to other countries, money, and our military.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. King were alive today, he would not only protest black rights, but he would protest for the rights of all those that are oppressed under the system today. In the 50’s and 60’s, one of the most discriminated group of people in America were the Blacks. But now, so many groups of people are discriminated against. To have anything change, he would have to change people's mindsets, because if they stop discriminating against one group of people but still discriminate another, then the need to oppress is still with them.
I have dreams for the world that I doubt would happen, either ever or for a while. I would love to know that my brother or father won’t be killed because being black makes them a suspicious character, but that just wishful thinking when I see all the deep rooted hate in America. I would love for stereotypes not to be placed upon people based upon what they look like and where they come from, but it is human nature to judge. I would love for white men not to somehow be controlling America, with a mix of races that occupy America instead. I would love for all races to accurately be represented. I would love for Americans to realize that the country they live in has never been the land of the free and if something doesn’t change, it never will be. But that’s not happening for a while. However, with the fear of Trump being in office is starting to push people to think, albeit few. People complain but are scared to mess with the status quo because they are safe where they are. So, at the moment my ‘dreams’ right now are not going to happen too soon.
ReplyDeleteDr. King was such an amazing activist who made great changes in the world. We need him back. We need someone as powerful as he was to help lead us towards the change we need. Our world is full of racists and horrible people who commit horrible acts against others. If Dr. King was still alive I still think he would still be fighting for equality between black people and white people. Dr. King is someone who would never settle or compromise for anything less then absolute equality for African Americans, and in today’s world that is still not the case. African Americans still aren't treated fairly even though they have the same rights as everyone else. He wouldn't be okay with how things are now and that's why I believe he wouldn't change the direction of his protest. But I do believe that our generation is very influential and that Dr. King would inspire more people to lead other movements about other important issues.
My own dream is for everyone to just be equal unless someone has given you the reason for them to not be treated that way. I hate people being judged by their skin color, gender, sexual identity, religion, or where they are from. It has always bothered me to see people being treated wrongly because others assume the worst. I have a dream that one day everyone can just live together in peace.
These next 4 years are going to rip away any hope I have of my dream coming true. Trump is against everything I believe in and will ruin any progress that this country has made. I can’t handle the fact that our new president is someone so filled with hate and negativity. It makes me sick to my stomach to think about what our country might become.
If Dr. King were alive today, I don't think his dream would be different. No I wouldn't say that America hasn't progressed in the category of equality, but I do dare say that we haven't nearly met his dreams. He says in his speech that he dreams that one day all men will be treated equally and today, this dream STILL has not been met because this country is filled with inequality. Some men are treated better than others because of their physical appearance. Whether it be because of skin color, hair style, clothing, or even eye shape, people are treated better than others. Of course MLK in this statement didn't mean only men, which just helps support the case of him not changing anything. This is because women aren't being treated equally in America, which is shown by the growth of protests around the country by women. He also states "I have a dream… will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." This dream would still be unchanged because this whole country judges people based on skin color. If someone were to be "black," they would be treated differently than someone who would be "white." Black people are stereotyped as "lesser" than white people(Disclaimer: I'm not saying I agree, I just think this is what America feels). My own dream about the future of the world is that I dream for it to be happy. I have a dream that I can walk down the streets and not see a single person asking for money. I have a dream that everyone will have the same opportunities. I have a dream that my children will be able to walk the hallways of schools without being afraid. I have a dream that I myself will not have to be afraid of being hurt by another person. I have a dream that the world could live peacefully and in harmony. The American dream consists of wealth, opportunity, and freedom, but frankly those things don't just present themselves here. America has a lot of promises that just go unfilled. I have a dream that the American dream could come true but with the president we have, the dream that I dream might just be for another night's rest. Because for the next four years, I truly doubt that we will be living in a dream. The next four years will not change my dream because whatever happens, I still want the world to live in harmony and peace with each other. If I let myself change my dreams just because of a president, then I shouldn't have started dreaming.

ReplyDeleteNow that Donald Trump has been sworn in as president of the United States, half of the American people are extremely acerbic. They refuse to hear the words “Pres. Donald Trump”. When they hear this, the automatically wail, cry, scream, go into a tantrum like a caged chimpanzee, or fall into despair. During the national event of the inauguration on January 20, 2017, numerous bizarre events happened. More than 200 people were arrested, thousands of protesters filled the streets of Washington DC, violence broke out, protesters threw bricks and bottles at the police while the police retaliated by pepper spraying them (extremely sad), some nut job set a limousine on fire, vandalism of properties etc. All this happened just because a man they disliked really well became president. I understand that Trump has said a plethora of vile and obnoxious things to different people regarding race, gender, sexuality etc, but this is ridiculous. That they I witnessed how childish America became. That day instead of living in peace , remain at ease and accept the fact he is going to be our president, they threw a tantrum. I personally was waiting for a 1,000,000 jolts of lightning to strike the crap out of all those animalistic protesters. ( They should be embarrassed) I was really apathetic to the election for it did not concern me. It was a lose lose situation. And if the coin were to flip to the other side, the result would have been the same. Half didn’t like Trump and what makes you think the other half were the same way with Clinton. I’m glad the election is over it and glad we have a president. Despite what he proclaimed or said , I what to give him a chance. He seems to know what he wants to do for the country. So let us give him the spotlight he deserves.
Well the purpose of Martin Luther King Jr's “I Have A Dream” speech was to obtain equality and equal rights for African Americans. ( Racial equality is essential for people to peacefully coexist) The dream did come to fruition as the United States is pretty much multifarious, but racism has evolved into stereotypes which is placed on certain people regarding race, sexuality, and gender. I personally think his dream would slightly change as his originally dream has come to pass. African Americans and Caucasians already are united, living in harmony, no one is treated differently, we all go to the same school, same bathroom, we talk together, walk together in the same street and path. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed in a number of reticular principles. He believed in racial equality, non-violence, Christian values etc. He would be elated to see how far America has changed but the violence residing in the US will not bold well with him. I think his new dream will be for everyone to be at peace and relinquish violence once and for all.
My dream for the future of the world is for everyone to live fully, be full of joy, happiness and be in harmony. No violence, no more blood, tears, fears, or war. Everyone is united and one. ( Together we stand, together we fall) Though it may sound impossible or perceived as a utopia/fantasy. I think one day it may come to pass. Expect the Unexpected.
Furthermore, as for the question: What kind of impact will the next four years have on that dream? I don’t know and the whole US as well. It may be in my favor or not. It’s all up to God.

Typically, I would not care much for the inauguration speeches or for politics overall since they were never of interest to me. But this year’s presidential election and its absurdities forced me to start paying attention to the newly inducted president, Donald Trump, and his recent inauguration. Too many people who disagree with the ideas of the xenophobic and racist president, the recent inauguration symbolizes the beginning of the death of America. The inauguration has stirred numerous riots and protests that blatantly shows the disapproval of the new president. His views on women and other human rights are preposterous and his continuous line of promises that he says he will do to immigrants makes it harder to believe that a guy like him is now our leader. Additionally, the inauguration was a reminder that this is actually happening and that Trump becoming the president of the United States was not just in our imaginations.
ReplyDeleteMartin Luther King Jr. was an inspirational and a strong willed individual who pushed for nonviolent protests and walks against black segregation during that time. He persevered through all of the obstacles that were thrown at him and his contributions led to the success of the civil rights movement. If Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today, I believe that his dreams will only alter a little bit to not only just include African Americans, but to include other minorities into his dreams of a world without segregation. Even though relationships between Whites and Blacks improved from back then, minorities and women are not receiving the same equality and rights that a white straight male gets. So Dr. King would focus on the issues with LGBT rights, women's rights, and on improving the life of African Americans.
My dreams for the future of this world would be to live in a time where discrimination was not a major issue and that the ones in poverty around the world would not have to suffer as much as they do today. Although I dream of a world without discrimination, I know that the chances of it becoming reality are close to zero percent. The reason for this is because I believe that discrimination is in the hearts of everyone and that it is not possible to get rid of discrimination without making everyone the same: personality, looks, intelligence, etc. On the other hand though, dreaming of a world without people suffering from not being able to afford the daily bread or a home is more plausible than trying to get rid of discrimination overall.
I have a dream in where everyone was not discriminated against each other just because of their color, religious beliefs, or of their sexuality. We do not judge others based on stereotypes or any kind of past knowledge about someone who shares a common trait with them.
DeleteI have a dream in where being in poverty or homeless is not a major issue and most people are living fulfilling lives. No one has the disadvantage of being poor and everyone would be able to afford some kind of education. Even with a little bit of education, people are still able to apply for jobs that will get them through life in a house or have a family.
I have a dream in where the world became a peaceful one and there were no wars or any reasons to fight each other. Terrorist groups are non-existent and all of the countries and its people would all be able to get along with each other, despite the different ethnic and religious groups.
I have a dream in where the world becomes more eco-friendly and that global warming wouldn’t be a major issue anymore. The world would not need to rely on oil anymore; this would prevent the countries from fighting over any oil preserves. Our children would be able to breathe the clean air and drink the purified water and the children after that would have access to the same privileges.
Over the next four years, I think that these dreams would not even come close to being fulfilled. With Donald Trump in office, discrimination and segregation between different ethnic groups, especially Mexicans, would increase and the chaos would erupt because of this. Trump also does not want to aid the push to become more eco-friendly, which would set back the dream of having access to non-polluted air. With the belligerent Trump in office, conflicts between other foreign countries and major groups within the nation would increase, possibly making the next four years a violent one. So overall, these dreams will be delayed from ever coming close to happening.
Dr. Kings dream would be the same but a little different because he'll be more focused on police brutality on black people and minorities and women's rights. I believe that because that's the main problem as of right now in America are those two things, and I think that that's the main reason that the country is falling into pieces. My own dream about the future is that maybe one day people will get over the racist barrier and have love for anyone and everyone. If that happened this country would be so much better because people will get along more, have less deaths, and generate more people. Right now America needs that so that's why I believe that if King talked about these topics the world would be better, simply because he would get this changed.
ReplyDeleteI have a dream that one day I won't have to fear for my life if I get pulled over.
I have a dream that I will get the same privileges that my white friends get.
I have a dream that women would be treated equal as men.
I have a dream that I'll be able to walk the streets with a hood on without getting shot.
I have a dream that I can show up in a white function and not feel awkward.
I have a dream that there will be no such thing as a white or black function, it's just a function.
I have a dream that the history flips.
I have a dream when people won't be know as different races but as one.
I have a dream I won't have to worry about my sister getting touched in the street.
I have a dream one day I won't be called a nigger.
In the next for years I think all my dreams won't be changed. With this new president honestly i don't know how it's gonna turn out in the next for years I can just hope the best for me, my people, and my country. I'm just hoping that trump can get it done and guide this country in the right direction.
This is a really good response, Alex
DeleteWhen it comes to the recent inauguration there are 3 types of people: people who are terrified of what's to come, people who are excited for what's to come, and people who don't care because they don't feel that it directly affects them. I would fall in the first category along with many other people. If I were in a room alone with our current president I would not feel safe. He has openly sexualized his own daughter and has talked about women as if they were made for his enjoyment. What scares me more is what he represents. He sends out the message that being racist, homophobic, ableist, xenophobic and having no respect towards the opposite gender is okay. I constantly hear the argument the he is the president and doesn't have the power to change everything overnight and I get where those people are coming from but what he can and has already begun to do is give hope and be a role model for people like him. People are going to look at him and say if he can grab a women by the pussy so can I. People who share his same beliefs are now going to be outspoken about them. They have already started to.
ReplyDeleteThe world we currently live in has not been in a peaceful state for a while and throwing in the events of this election cannot make it any better. I don't believe that if Dr. King were alive today that he would change his dream. I think he would merely alter it to add equality for people of different genders and sexualities. During his time the main issue was race inequality and the mindset that white people were superior to all others. Although we have made tremendous progress that mindset is still around today. Don't get me wrong I definitely think he would be proud of how much we have accomplished and tears would surely fill his eyes at the fact that a strong black man was elected president not once but twice but I don't think he would stop fighting. Hed be fighting for women's rights, for lgbt rights, and continue to fight for the rights of black people. Dr. King would be disgusted at some of the things still happening in this country. America has come far in the battle for equality but we still have a long way to go.
I have a dream that that one day tampons and pads will be free because they are a necessity. Many women don't have access to these things because of the price and tax on them. We didn't chose to bleed every month yet our wallets are being punished for it. Not just that but it has become a punchline and that any time a woman is upset or moody it must be because it's that time of the month again. Also think about all the homeless women who have to deal with their periods in different ways because they have to chose between buying a meal or buying pads.
DeleteI have a dream that the gender pay gap will cease to exist. Women should not be paid less for the same job a man does just because of what's in between her legs.
I have a dream that conversion therapy becomes 100% illegal everywhere. There is still conversion therapy in states that have banned it. The horrible people who run these operation have found loopholes. They uses God and the bible as an excuse to harm children. There are 45 states who have 0 laws against conversion therapy.
I have a dream that being apart of the lgbt community does not put a target on your back. People don't realize how dangerous it is to come out sometimes. There are countries where being gay is illegal. Trans women of color have been brutally murdered. Lgbt youth are bullied to death. This is not okay. Who you love shouldn't make people sometimes even your own family want to kill you.
I have a dream that one day the rapist will no longer be given parental rights. Do you understand how traumatizing it is to have to text your rapist what time they are picking up your son or daughter for the weekend. How hard it is to face them and have to hand over a child to them. The person that violated and disrespected your body will be alone with your child. The person that haunts your nightmares is still there when you open your eyes. Rapist should not have parental rights.
I have a dream that one day women will be respected as much as men. Men and women should be treated equally. Men should not represent power while women represent weakness due to emotions. Some of the most strongest people I know are women. Women are resilient and powerful.
I have a dream that one day women will not be scared to walk to their cars alone. That one day women will not feel the need to alter their way of life (what they say, what they wear, etc) in fear of sending the wrong message to a man. That one day men will stop seeing women as objects.
I have a dream that my friends and family who are black won't wake up everyday afraid. A person cannot change the color of their skin. It's not a suit that they can take off after a long day at the office. No one should be afraid to just walk outside.
My dream is for people of all races, genders, sexuality, and walks of life to have a fair and equal chance to thrive in this world. I want equality for all!
The next for years will be hard in terms of going further in our mission for equality. I don't see my dreams coming true in these upcoming years but I do see is the determination and fighting for what's right to continue. The Women's March being an example of that.
With a prejudice and pervert man like Donald Trump being able to run our country, I have no other reason but to fear for the future of my country. As a Hispanic woman I have every reason to not like Mr. Trump. However, the only thing that i’m really able to do is hope for the best of the next four years. The dream I have for my country is that we’ll be able to be kind to one another and to not have as much racism lingering around as there is today. That people won’t feel the need to trash talk and lower the self esteem of others to feel better. To go about this there will have to be more peace and others will have to just learn the simple idea of keeping bad thoughts to themselves. Keeping bad thoughts to ourselves has been the main reason there is racism and violence. If people would just keep to themselves more there would be no need to interfere with others’ lives.
ReplyDeleteIf Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was still alive today, his dream would be almost the same as mine, to end racism and violence. He would just want everyone to be at peace. Also, his dream of blacks and whites getting along hasn’t come true yet unfortunately. As I said, there is still racism lingering around especially when we have a president like Donald Trump. I honestly hope our country can come together and that there will be world peace.
If Dr.King were alive today I think his dream would be similar but a little different. Society has advanced in a few ways since that speech. People are now allowed to marry whomever they want. People today are much more accepting of interracial couples. If he had to give the speech again I think it would focus more on how some police treat certain races, and how some people treat others. My dream for the future is for everyone to be accepting of others. I want people to realize that just because some people are different doesn't make them bad people. People also need to get their head out of their asses and realize that someone else's decisions isn't any of their business, and they shouldn't voice their opinion on it. People need to realize that just because you disagree doesn't mean the other person is wrong. I dream of a society that allows all to live their lives in a free and chill manor. I dream of a society that doesn't suppress minorities but instead raises them up. I dream of a society that allows and accepts people who are different. I dream of a society where everyone helps everyone. I dream of everyone living free for once and for all. These next 4 years will either bring everyone together, or tear us all the part. These next 4 years is either the start of something amazing, or the start of a decline in America. I'm hoping for the best but planning for the worst, I just hope that after the next 4 years I can still say that I am a proud american.
ReplyDeleteTo be completely honest the minute I saw what this blog was about, I wanted to use my skip. I know myself too well to know that I wouldn’t have anything important to say or that I barely have any opinions on this topic at all. I wanted to take the easy road and just ignore the question altogether. But then I thought about the people. The people of America who are being criticized and bashed just because of who they are. Some of those people not have a voice, and people in other countries may not have a voice. And here I am just in an eleventh grade advanced english class and I’m too ignorant to have a voice. I realized that I’m wasting my first right to have freedom of speech, so I decided to answer this question the best way I can, even if it’s not good enough for anybody.
ReplyDeleteI would like to start off with a quote from somebody close to me that has stuck in my brain since hearing it. “Bullying is never going to go away. We just need to teach people how to deal and handle bullying.” I one-hundred percent agree with this quote. Now, I relate it to the topic of racism and discrimination. I believe that there will always be racism and people who are cruel to a group of people who are different then them. Even in the future there still may be a small amount of those narrow minded people. However, I truly wish with all my heart that one day we will all be equal in this world and if I could end discrimination believe me I would. It’s just that putting down another group of people has been around since B.C. times and will continue until we all are long gone. Furthermore, Dr.King had a dream. A dream that most of us in this small community believe in also. Even though this country has come a long way and has grown since his speech, I think his dream would be slightly altered. His dream would be for people to edify the provincial people. For Americans to ignore the people that discriminate them and dwindle their numbers. For Americans to share their views and intelligence about the adverse cultures and communities. His dream would relate to not only people against blacks and whites, but to everybody who is different in their own special way.
Now, moving on to my dream. If you didn’t notice in my previous two paragraphs, I didn’t reference or highlight any specific event or movement. This is because I am one of those people who are ignorant about this country. I have a dream that in the future, there won’t be people like me. That people learn about the news and what’s going on in the real world. Nobody should be a bystander and have no opinions or views. I have a dream for myself that I grow as a citizen and as a person and make myself more aware about America. After all, I am seventeen now and becoming an adult in this country.
I have a dream that the next generation of children will have to ask us about these events. That there won’t be anymore horrible news stories about racism or discrimination. I dream that these events will stay in the past for children to learn about, not for them to live.
I have a dream that the people who know what is good will not harshly turn against benighted Americans, but rather educate them peacefully. And if those people are too good to listen to your words, do not give them a fight. Do not give them what they want, which is for people to argue with each other and admit they are right. If you have an opinion that makes the world better, stick to it with all your heart. Let you and the people around you be the bright, wise, and loving person you know you are. Do not let negative people pop your positoovity bubble.
DeleteI don’t expect these things to burgeon spontaneously over the next 4 years, but behaviors will change over a longer period of time. However, people who truly believe the country can change will make the process move faster. This country is either going to ban together and spread the positive change the people want to happen or they will be taken down by the negative people. Either way, please don’t let anybody influence you and your decisions. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and nobody ever is going to agree on the same exact thing. I just hope that people will learn to express their opinions in a peaceful way and give respect to each other. After all this is our country and we are all here together.
