The above quote is from one of my favorite coaches of all time, former UCLA basketball coach, ''The Wizard of Westwood" John Wooden. I talk a lot about him throughout the year because he's kind of a hero of mine, even though I claim not to have any.
This quote, one of his more well known ones, got me thinking about the state of the world we live in, and how one day soon, it will be up to all of you to fix it. No pressure. :( But, if you even glance at the TV when the news is on, you know I speak truth.
We're in bad shape, and I am seriously doubting the world's so-called political leaders have a clue how to go about reversing the damage.
But, that's what I think is so great about kids. Your potential is limitless, your perspectives are fresh, and your souls aren't yet weary (I truly hope). All that simply means--if the world is going to change, it will be because you guys changed it.
Let's start with what you think is wrong. Maybe you think it's racism, maybe you think it's a propensity for violence, maybe you think it's ignorance, maybe you think it's sexism or poverty, or the fact that we've had the same 2-party political system for the past 200 years. Talk a little about what you think is truly wrong with the world. Think macro or microcosm (society at large, or Oakcrest society), and really tear into what needs to be changed and what, we, the adults in the room, did wrong. How could you, would you, should you, do it better or simply differently?
What you're doing is more than a blog posts, pumpkins. It's more than an assignment, more than a Genesis entry--this is your world and eventually your lives. Both of those things matter. Show me how much.

With today's world, there's a lot of things wrong with our society that could be changed. However, the main problems that have remained in our society from generations before us would have to be racism and sexism. Racism is a huge problem in the world because so many people feel that their race is more superior than others. It has been a problem for decades now, which is why it makes no sense as to why it is still a conflict in the 21st century. Racism is a huge topic, which ties in with the #BlackLivesMatter protest. The Black Lives Matter was brought up because of the Racism involved with cops who shot innocent black people. For awhile Black lives matter was doing good, there wasn't really any criticism and protests against the idea. Until, someone created the protest #AllLivesMatter which was probably made up by a white person. No matter what, White people always have had the higher end of any particular problem in society. Where, if you put a black kid and white kid doing the same crime, because of the color on their skin, the black kid would probably face more penalties.
ReplyDeleteThe cause of racism could be the fact that the older generations can't stand the fact that segregation isn't a thing anymore. A lot of people like to have the same routine, without any change. Once there's change they can't take it and will do everything they can to try and get what they want back (They're probably the ones voting for Trump). Also, a lot of people have raised their kids to only like their race and to discriminate other races that aren't like theirs. The adults should have tried to break the cycle of racism and should have eliminated the judgement of skin color. I feel that everyone should be treated equally no matter what race because we are all different in our own ways and the color of our skin shouldn't matter. I will continue to stand up for people who are discriminated based on their race and will do my best to alert other people.
Sexism is still alive due to the fact that a lot of males feel as though women don't have the power to do what they can. Women have been looked at as house wives and sex objects since the beginning of time. Still today, through commercials and magazines women are best represented by barely wearing any clothes and showing cleavage. Also, a lot of men just see women as sex objects and they think we're only here to reproduce. (Again, if you agree with any of this... Vote trump!) Even in other countries, girls our age are not allowed to receive an education and are forced to marry how their parents choose. Also, they are told that their responsibility is only to tend to their husband's needs and to reproduce.
Women should not be listed as any of these things because we are capable of so much more. There are so many achievements that women today have made, which prove how intelligent and great we are. A long with racism, sexism has just moved down from generations and it doesn't have an exact cause but the fact that people are still stuck in the old times. However, I feel sexism is doing a little better than racism where there aren't as many problems now. As a women, I will continue to do great and prove to others that I am much more capable of what the stereotype of a woman is.
Let me start off by saying that no one has lived long enough to list all of the world’s problems, simply because the list is endless. Environmentally speaking, air pollution, lack of recycling, deforestation, animal cruelty, global warming, etc. are all ongoing problems that most likely will just keep getting worse. Humanity wise, there is no humanity left. There are people killing each other, stealing from each other, lying to each other, hurting each other. When good deeds are done, they are posted all over social media, and those videos receive thousands of likes and views. Why? Maybe it’s because of the fact that good deeds are rarely ever done for the right reason. Maybe it’s because of the fact that it’s fascinating seeing someone doing good to others without benefiting from it. What makes someone want to record another person giving a homeless person a meal or clothes or shoes? I am choleric at the fault in humanity. I think it all begins in preschool when little kids are rewarded for picking up someone’s pencil or holding the door for someone else. Standards are set extremely low from the beginning. For example, once someone gets the award they have been desperately wanting, they either seek out more fame and rewards, or they fall back and get lazy because they feel as if they have already accomplished everything they wanted in life. After the preschooler gets a gold star for pushing in someone else’s chair, they do more and more “good” deeds because they enjoy the reward that comes with it. When I was in kindergarten, my teacher gave everyone in my class rewards for things I thought were extremely silly (which is probably why I never got one). I definitely appreciate recognition for my hard work and dedication to my schoolwork, but that is not what I am after.
ReplyDeleteThis past weekend I visited Millersville University, near Lancaster, PA. The drive there was a little over two hours and took us through the windy roads of the amish country. We passed countless horses and buggies which made me extremely thankful that I grew up and am still growing up this day and age. As I learn and grow so is technology, just look at iPhones, 16 years ago no one was able to google cute pictures of puppies from a tap of a finger. Thinking about that a lone I’m proud to be the younger generation of this boost, but it could also be scary. As technology advances, so does global problems, the biggest one being violence. The world is scary. Between ISIS and the multiple protests and riots due to injustice of the government fear has stricken the world. My mom, being the overprotective person she is, worries about me going to places such as the mall or the movies. This problem has been increasing for a while now and it’s up to my generation to make a change, but before the change is made, we must find out why it's occurring and how we can stop it. First and foremost stereotypes. There are people in the world who are ignorant to the different cultures and religions. They are blindsided and can’t tell the difference. It’s hard to have equality when you’re stuck on someone else's opinions. It takes experience to learn something new. This summer I lifeguarded for a pool company and worked all over south jersey. I’ve seen everything, giving me more respect for strangers I’ll never see again. At a specific pool in Mays Landing, the neighborhood was occupied by mainly black families. At this pool there are security guards that make sure the rules are being followed. These guards always targeted this one young male. Yes, this patron was a little over the top, but he did not break any rules, he did nothing wrong. Multiple times these guards have tried to escort him out for nothing. This situation was the type you would hear on the news but of course narrowed down to a small altercation in this small town. A certain stereotype was targeted. This problem needs to be fixed, and to do so my generation should just take a step back and look. Observe their neighbors, observe their teammates, and observe their friends. No body adds up to their stereotypes and no one deserves to be treated like so. It might take an army to change the nation, but this country has come a long way, anything is possible.
ReplyDeleteEveryone has their own perspective on things and some may be wrong and some may not be wrong. A lot of people see the black lives matter movement as a good thing and other see it as just mobs. Some see good in bad people and some only see just the bad. I asked my grandfather this question and he said, "the world today is politically correct, no one is willing to help each other or even acknowledge one another. There are to many grey areas and no one will talk about them, you're either right or wrong and apparently the 70's culture is here today. In the 70's it was all about peace and love and those same people are running the country now and running it into the country into the ground with so much hatred... give me a break, we're all equal and make it so. Everyone wants the same thing, to be prosperous." I believe in this also, to me he answered it the best he could and stick with what he said, never swayed off his topic. I asked my grandfather about this question to get his perspective and see how he thinks. To my surprise we are very similar and I agree completely with him. So it's not what the adults did that's wrong, it's who we chose to do those things. It was our fault for choosing the leaders today.

ReplyDeleteUnity. The whole thing starts with unity and how some people interpret what unity is. The definition from Dictionary.com of unity is: “a whole or totality as combining all its parts into one”. From how I see things, forming groups such as LGBT, Black Lives Matter, and political parties are not forms of unity, but instead are forms of separation. Do not get me wrong, it is not like I do not see the purpose of why these groups are formed, I do, but I do not believe that by protesting and creating groups that will split a whole society in half is “unity”. Maybe I am being too impractical for wishing for world peace (okay, I am), but wish is a synonym of hope and hope is something that should not be given up. In order for something like world peace to happen, we should start with something small first like calming down a nation or state because from all the violence and killings I have seen on the news and internet, I do not see a peaceful country happening any time soon.
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I remember from my U.S. History class last year was that George Washington warned his people about political parties in his farewell speech and how dangerous and ill-natured they are for the society. He said (and I quote from CNN) “(political) parties put their own interests above those of the country”. Now, I do not like to touch upon politics as I try to stay away from them as much as I can, hence why my précis will never have anything to do with politics, but if I could just turn back time or go hop onto a time machine, I would stop political parties from ever forming in the first place. Not because I think political parties is the one thing that split the nation in half, but because it was the first thing (as far as I know) which caused the nation from keeping unity.
I truly believe, although we are at our highest point yet in technology, we are at our worst state the country has been in. The fact that people say civil rights is present is a lie. Times are the same as the 60's. Blacks still do not obtain much liberty and equality, just watch the news. That is only one problem, there are so many present in this current decade. It feels like it is only getting worse and soon, war will break out if we do not act. Between the poverty problems, equality issues, terrorist problems, harassment, etc. I believe this all stems from ignorance. I don't believe the adults have completely failed us, but have not taught and raised us well enough. I blame this on how times change. Even similar problems are still going on, it is not how it used to be. Technology, intelligence, and opportunities have become new and the adults don't know how to adapt to that. They think they can connect to us and teach us the same way they were taught. This results in a lack of connection and mutual understanding. We as the future need to prepare to take serious action and stand up for what we believe is right, our generation is the one that has to do it or it may end up in self destruction of this country, that has had so much built into it and is known for the greatest country to ever stand. We must also be open to accepting the fact that times have changed and we must learn how to adapt and teacht our kids in a way that they will understand and relate to. The problem of equality has been around for too long, it is time for us to stand up as a country holding hands and say enough is enough. It is on our shoulders, we can only learn from the mistakes of those before us.

ReplyDeleteI agree that our generation and generations to follow can really shape the direction the world goes. But children are influenced by the words and actions of their elders. If someone is taught to hate a person because of their ethnicity, sexual preference, or gender, then they will grow up to teach the same to the following generations. That's how bigotry lives. I think what's ultimately keeping us from reaching great measures as a society is all pointed back to prejudices and racism. Racism is the more obvious one of the two, and it's so obvious because it's still something people hold on to. Having this mindset that you're better than any person because of complexion is definitely going to cause a divide, a divide between people in a nation or divide between people in a small community. It's hard for people of color to live in a society when white supremacy still exists and when economic inequality keeps the people separated like oil and water. If you see cities populated heavily with minorities with high crime rate, and high mortality rate, and other things keeping it from striving you have to ask yourself why doesn't the government do anything? Oppressed people who live in conditions like that, prepare themselves for the worst. Like how a young black man might think because he didn't have a proper education or a good house hold and no chance for job opportunity that selling drugs is the only option. That only triggers more gun violence and more dead males and females. The second point is prejudices, which goes beyond racism, sexism, or any of the other isms and points attention to that fact that people will always have a mindset that they are better than someone else. Weather its thinking they are smarter, wealthier, prettier or more handsome, or even better because of body type , there will always be an imbalance. So what I could do to contribute to this is by raising the kids I may or may not have to hate no one and judge yourself before judging anyone around you. I am someone my younger cousins, my nephews, my younger friends look up to, to setting an example myself is teaching them in a way. Correcting the wrong with right even when it seems like Justice.
As for today, in the town I live in and the school I go to, I feel that it's the same thing. People are taught to hate and judging someone is almost second nature so maybe with good influences and better role models, they could redirect the way we think and act.
With everything that is happening around the world right now, whether it’s racism, or sexism, or even poverty, I believe that you can boil all of those problems down to a single cause: ignorance. Before I begin, let me set one thing straight. Ignorance is not stupidity. Stupidity is not knowing the facts. Ignorance, however, is knowing the facts, but deliberately choosing not to believe them. Ignorance, in some cases, is worse than stupidity.
ReplyDeleteTake racism for example. Ever since the shooting of Treyvon Martin in Florida, people have been on edge, especially the black community and the police force. Black Lives Matter was a direct result of this, and even though they had started with peaceful intentions, they have crossed the line. In Ferguson, Missouri, the movement has escalated so quickly, that they have resorted to anti-police protests and rioting, which has caused martial law to be enforced. This is a prime example of ignorance. Just because some cops shoot blacks, the whole situation has gone to shit (excuse my language). People are believing that since one cop has done it, the rest of the cops are preparing to do the same. It’s like saying, if your local Chinatown has the most accidents, all Asian people can’t drive. It is also like saying that if all terrorists are Muslim, then all Muslims are terrorists, or saying that if white person is arrested for stealing, then all white people are thieves. You can’t make generalizations on a whole community or creed based on the actions of a few.
Poverty can be boiled down to ignorance too. I am a firm believer in education. It is just common sense. If you get a decent education, you will be better off when you graduate then if you don’t get an education at all. People aren’t stupid, just ignorant. They know that education will provide them with the opportunities to better themselves, but instead choose to disrespect those who teach and disrupt other students’ learning environments. Then, in 20 years, they will be reflecting on their life instead and wondering why they are still working at McDonald’s for minimum wage, when they could have been an engineer making six figures a year.
Though it may not seem like it, sexism is caused by ignorance too. In society, it is seen that women cannot do the things that men can do. However, in the past few decades, women have proven this ancient notion to be wrong. Some women have broken the barrier that once separated the two genders. Some women have become stronger, faster, and more durable than most men. However, people still like to stereotype them, whether it be a close friend or an employer looking to hire. This is plain ignorance. They know that there are women out there who can perform just as well as men can, but still choose to not give other women a chance to do the same.
Dang. I realized just how much I had to say about this topic.
DeleteThe thing that I find wrong in this world is how sensitive people are and get offended by little things or things that shouldn't even be debated about. I am mainly talking about people who always want to be politically correct all the time. People will jump at you if you say something that offends one or two people in the world and needs to be changed and corrected when it doesn't need to be. Calling someone black, calling someone Indian and not Native American, even associating a transgender with the original gender they were born with at birth. If you were born a male, you are a male and if you are born a female, you are a female and these are the only two genders there are. I'm not saying you can't classify as whatever you want, I'm saying that it needs to say what original gender you are on all documents for anything in the world and go to the bathroom with your original gender. Another issue we have right now in America is the black lives matter movement. I find this whole black lives matter thing very unnecessary and needs to end. Just because one black person gets shot on camera by a white cop doesn't instantly make all cops bad and corrupt. My dad was cop and was never corrupt or bad at his job and never went after black people as his main target. Now people are rioting and destroying neighborhoods for one shooting when there are tons of people that die everyday in america. We should be worrying about ISIS and how people are getting beheaded just for being gay or following another religion. So people should stop worrying about the little things that happen in this country and start worrying about the big issues in America and the world
ReplyDeleteThe world at the moment is not a pleasant place to be. I say world because there is a fine line between peace and tranquility between countries. We are a war right now. Everyone laughs at our country. They lack at us because we look like fools that have no clue what they're doing to keep the peace. What our country lacks is love. All there is nowadays is hate. Nobody respects anyone anymore. There is barely any relationships anymore. There are riots going on and there are rapists that are just walking around freely. If everyone learned to respect others and learned to gain relationships between the stereotypes that are being harassed in this world. Its sad that nobody loves each other anymore. There is no forgiveness. Just screaming and rioting and aggressive media outburst that sway towards one side of the story so that biased people just listen to their views and automatically don't forgive or understand. Our country is at a scary place right now. There is no one in the campaign for president that is going to help change this country. It's a scary thought as I am going to be raised in a country for a good solid 4 years of my life with two idiots that haven't a clue about what our country is going through. The future's not bright and everyone needs to start loving again.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of the problems of the world today many things come to mind. One problem is that kids are growing up believing things that their parents think are right, when these things really aren't right. If a parent is racist and judges certain groups of people, then the kid will group believing the same things. Parents need to teach their kids at a young age that people shouldn't be judged based on what they look. How someone looks means nothing about who they are, but so many people will judge others based on what they look like, when they don't even know them. Many people are discriminated against because of what they look like and it is really wrong. It would be some much better if parents taught their kids to keep an open mind and get to know people, not just judge them by what they look.I also think that some leaders are corrupt and lie to cover up the truth. This is unfair because people are manipulated by the media and other things, and have no choice but to believe everything they see. It would be better if people looked into things because not everyone or everything is always what it seems. Violence is also a very big problem in the world, and it's hard to prevent. Their are so many different attacks and killings that go on and it's terrible. Violence happens everywhere and you never know when it's going to happen and this is why it's so hard to stop. Better laws and stricter security would help prevent some of the attacks and killings that go on, on a daily basis, but violence will always be a problem. It's messed up to see random acts of violence on innocent people just because of who they look or what they believe in. It's really scary to live in a world with all these terrible things going on and we need to put a stop to it. I think it's up to our generation to fix these problems in the world. If not, then we keep having the same problems plus new ones in the years to come. Hopefully these problems get solved, but it's going to be up to us and not the president.
ReplyDeleteFor the 16 years I have been living in this world full of never ending issues, I feel as though that EVERYTHING is wrong. Throughout, all of my years of being in school, I learn the same thing in history every year. Whether it has to do with racism, sexism, violence, etc. As I watch the news every once in a while, I hear about Donald Trump. I am not a big fan. I feel like as long as I am living on this earth, nothing is going to get better, and I hope that nothing will get worst. In my opinion racism is something that will never be able to be changed. People are not born racist. Racism is something that is taught. People have been talking about racism ever since segregation has ended. Everyone is so pressed on trying to put an end to it, not realizing that it’s not really possible. People are always entitled to how they feel about anything, and there is always going to be that certain percentage who is wrong. The more and more we are pressed on things that cannot be changed in the world, the more conflict we will end up having.
ReplyDeleteAs far as sexism goes, for hundreds of years, it is in everyone’s head that men are stronger than woman in every way. For example, we have had 43 presidents sworn into the office and not one has been a woman. As far as the election goes with Trump and Clinton, Trump already has an advantage because the world believes that men are stronger, and that automatically means that he would be in a better position than Clinton to handle certain conflicts. I feel as though, that woman is just as strong as men, but that is something that will never change unless it is able to be proved, and it has been over the past few decades. The history of Woman was always responsible for being the house wife while men went out and got their education and worked. I believe that is extremely wrong. Your sex should not have any title and any say of what you can or cannot do. Fortunately, women were and still are able to prove this conception wrong. I see us getting stronger and stronger every day.
If I could, I would change a lot of things in the world and in our society. There are many things in this world that need to be fixed and with the two candidates we have now, neither one is going to be able to make a difference in our world.
The United States of America. On paper, the US really is the place to go for independence. But in reality, it isn't exactly like that anymore. And to be more honest, the lyrics in our National Anthem don't live up to the country's name anymore as well. The US is plagued by multiple problems. One big one that sticks out is the political problem in this country at the moment. But rather talk about that again, I'd rather talk about a problem that possibly created all the other problems we currently have in this country, both micro and macro. And that would be gender roles. Gender roles have clearly evolved since the beginning of the 20th century. But before the 20th century, the man would go to work, put food on the table for his family, and pay the bills. While the woman would stay at home, clean the house, greet her husband when he came home, and this cycle would continue for the longest of time. Until about the 1920's when women began questioning their roles in society like why they couldn't vote. And to quickly summarize gender roles, women soon become more and more apart of roles that you would usually only see men in. And maybe, people had a problem with that. People, like say who grew up in the 1920's and were taught that this is what the women do and this is what the men do and it should always be like that, have a problem with this evolution. Because when you grow up, you're most likely going to teach your kids what you were taught and in the case of gender roles, there were obviously some people who have a problem with evolution of gender roles in society. But what people didn't understand is that what you teach your kids, their kids are gonna be taught the same thing and it can become a family tree that doesn't know how much society has evolved. Why do you think so many people denied the fact that a man is gay or a woman is a lesbian? Because they are so used to a mother and a father, when society undergoes a change, humans tend to deny that change and try to make it out as something evil or not holy, thus the problem with same sex marriage. What about women taking a political role in society. We all have already denied Sarah Palin as a republican, but she paved the road for Hillary Clinton to run for president. And with that comes the problem of the unemployment rate. More than half the country is either in the lower class or middle. There is a very little percentage of the country that is in the upper class in today's age. Maybe some of that contributes to the unemployment rate this country has. Not to mention families being neglected. And what I mean by that are single mothers in this country with families walking out because one parent can't provide because of the unemployment rate. And that can sometimes stems back to gender roles. So in conclusion, all the social issues you see in society today, whether it's same sex marriage or the unemployment rate, I believe they all stem from one problem that has plagued not only America, but the whole entire world: and that is gender roles. We as humans sooner or later have to accept what a man or a woman wants to be in life. If a woman wants to become the next president of the United States then let her. If a man wants to waste his life playing video games then let him. You can't tell people what to do anymore because society is just like that now. It's not a knock on the past, it's just society evolving, gender roles evolving. And whatever adults say, that have to respect the decisions that their kids and future kids will make. And some of them don't even make the decisions for themselves, they're just born that way like with the LGBT community. If it was up to me, I'd let people make they're own decisions, as long as they're not discriminating against another person.
ReplyDeleteAs what everybody says, today’s generation will create the world’s future. To start off, I believe that our society is in a period where there is a lack of peace. There are just so many issues happening in our world all at the same time. Every nation, country, and individual are just so against each other, as a result we are slowly bringing down one another. To name a few, there are these terrorist attacks, wars, climate changes, pollution, political conflicts, and even social media. Now, what do these cases all have in common aside from being our society’s biggest conflict? Greed. All these issues happen because of greed. Our world can never be peaceful because of the people’s greediness. We always want to have something more than the other. We want to be better than the other. I am not saying that competition is bad, but the competition we are having right now is crazy. There are innocent people dying, our environment is at risk, and too many insults are being thrown to each other everywhere (social media or in person). As an individual it may seem like an achievement, however, as whole it is the greatest downfall of humankind. I know it would not be easy to get everyone to get along, especially because we all have different opinions, beliefs, and ideals, but the best way to start it is to respect one another. Try to understand where someone is coming from, and if you don’t agree with it and have nothing nice to say, just keep it to yourself. We wouldn’t want a future where there won’t be any humans left, do we?
ReplyDeleteI think the world has one too many problems and they all can’t be listed, but I think the main ones are racism, sexism and envy. If you were to ask most people what they think is wrong with the world, most of them would say racism. Racism is an issue that had never completely disappeared and most people would say that it’s only getting worse as years pass. In history books, year after year, students read about how black people were mistreated because of their color and the truth is it still happens right now. There might not be signs saying “White people only,” but that doesn't hide the fact that racism still exists in schools, stores, work places, or anywhere. You’ll see that even in places like schools that sometimes black students will be treated differently and the person being racist may not make it too obvious, but he/she will make it obvious enough for the mistreated student to feel it.
ReplyDeleteAnother issue in the world is sexism. Just like racism, sexism might not always be too obvious, but you can feel it. Men and women still get treated differently because of their sex. There are people who don’t treat men and women differently and do believe that they should both be treated equally. There are also people who believe that women are only capable of cleaning, cooking and raising kids. They think women can’t accomplish what men can or do the same tasks men can do which is completely false because women have been doing the same things as men and sometimes women do tasks better than men. A woman can do a task perfectly and someone who believes a woman shouldn't be doing the task will find even the smallest fault.
The last big issue with the world is envy.Sadly, nobody can ever legitimately be happy for anyone even though they act like it. There’s always envy coming from someone whether it’s a stranger, family member, or even a best friend. Someone will always wish failure upon you just because they don’t like the fact that you are successful. What everyone can do to lessen these issues is don’t judge anyone because of their sex or race because everyone has equal rights to doing whatever they desire and their race or sex shouldn’t be something that discourages them. Also, do not bestow failure upon one another, but instead be happy for them and strive to become something just as successful or even better.
In the world we live in today there are countless things that are wrong with society as a whole. In my opinion the biggest thing that is wrong with the world is the people who live in it. Of course there are plenty of people that do good things and really help the world out but a majority aren't. With all of the violence and hatred in the world today who knows what the world will be in a couple years from now. Many people don't have trust for one another and war is constantly a problem in other parts of world. As people we need to unite and trust each other to make the world a better place. All this violence between people needs to stop.
ReplyDeleteThere has been controversy over the past few weeks about the shootings of unarmed black citizens in certain areas across the United States which have caused rioting and violence. While I one hundred percent disagree with these actions we as a society need to protest with less violence and need to address our issues in a calm manner. Most adults today see one thing go wrong and freak out instead of finding a better way to handle things. We could all improve if we united together so hate groups wouldn't be things anymore and everyone would just have love for one another and not hatred.
I tend to be a pessimist. I always have been. It started when I began to get a lot of homework and responsibilities. Stress, basically. You know, once I entered the “real” world. I have made it an effort to try my best each day to turn my negative thinking into positive thinking. Except, for when it comes to the reality of the world today. It is nearly impossible to change the concept of disrespect between each other into a positive thing. Does it help us in any way? Does it make us a better person? Does it make the world spin round? Does it save creatures and humans in need? No. The answer is a big fat NO. So what is the point of it? Why are people still using disrespect to get through their day? On another note, how can you think positively about shaming women? As a woman and soccer player myself, I am well aware of this issue in the “sport’s” world. For instance, take the men and women's national team. Same sport, same country, different gender. Despite the similarities, the men’s team gets paid more than the women’s team. For what reason, exactly? Not to mention that the women’s team has a far better record. It is the 21st century! Why are women STILL being looked at as worthless? These are two major things wrong with the world today and it can't be changed with just having a positive attitude. Disrespect and shaming women. Honestly, I don't have much hope for this to get any better. If things haven't changed by now, will they ever change? I focus on treating people (and women) with respect but I can't be the only one. Nor, can it be 2 people or 5 people or 200 people. This has to be an effort made by the entire world. This world is not going to change if people continue to be disrespectful to teachers, parents, family, friends, strangers, and even enemies. This world is not going to change if women keep being treated the way that they are. I like to think that this issue arose from the generation apart of the late 1800s. A time where women were treated extremely harsh. Some people have relatives from that time, which explains why their beliefs differ from ours, the later generation. If you have a parent figure or role model constantly telling you that women are useless (because that is all they know from their time), then you are expected to believe it, and pass that down to your kids and their kids and so on. So, my belief is that the reason this issue still exists is because the chain is still going. That information is still being taught and talked about. The only solution I could think of is to stop talking about it! That is the past. We, as a world, know what is right and wrong. The chain needs to be cut off. There is no longer a point for this concept to be passed down any longer (there was never a point anyway but you know what I mean.) As for the disrespect, that's just something that everyone needs to work on. To change your attitude, you need to change your morals and thoughts on what is important. Disrespect is something only you can fix. No one can fix it for you. I think it is time that the world goes through some changes. Again, these are only two important things. There are many more. So while we are ALL focusing on our attitudes and respect, we should advertise others to do it as well. Be an example, be a leader, be the change.
ReplyDeleteI think the problem with the world is that everyone cares too much but not enough. This could be interpreted as, people in this day and age are narrow-minded. To elaborate, people these days don't fully think about everything before carrying out an action. They act on a whim and they think only about themselves instead of the broader, wider spectrum. That's not the only thing though, there's a different interpretation of the caring too much but not enough. There are people who speak on a subject very passionately, but never care enough to do anything about it. Which of these interpretations are worse, I couldn't tell you, but both are bad in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteThe first interpretation of everyone caring too much but not enough is a pretty serious problem in today's society. Groups of people only account for the emotions or wellbeing of their own individual self or their own group, not others. In caring for themselves, although, they fail to account for others and they act on a whim. For example, policemen in caring for the community or themselves, act on whims and fatally injure African-Americans without fully thinking about the situation. They care too much about themselves but not about the other, contrasting group. Supporting my claim, Hillary Clinton, in last night's debate, stated that the two groups need to unite and they need to care for each other. This isn't the only way to be narrow-minded but this was an example that came to mind.
The second way that my statement can be interpreted is that there are people who are too scared to speak up. There are people in this world who always speak about the things that can be fixed but don't care enough to try and do something about it. There are also some ignorant people who speak on a subject but don't know what they're talking about and when told that, they don't care enough to inform themselves. They wanna know things but they don't wanna learn. An example of this is the general population of students. Everyone always wants to know things, everyone acts like they already know everything but when told they don't know everything, they don't want to learn. Students in the general population care so much about grades (this ties to being narrow-mined) and they fail to listen to the teacher that tells them not to stress about grades. Honestly, if you cared so much about your grades, then listen to your teacher, she probably knows best.
The adults I guess haven't showed us enough to care about each other and/or the right things in the world. Adults nowadays, in general this is, seem to care more about moneymaking than caring for what's right. The Black Eyed Peas famously quotes "Most of us only care about money makin'// Selfishness got us followin' the wrong direction," (Where is the Love). Which shows that people nowadays have their heads in the wrong areas in general. To change this… I honestly have no idea. To be completely honest I feel no strong connection to this blog topic so it's really hard to write about. But if I had to force an answer to the problem I've brought up, it would probably be that we should start thinking about everything around us before we make a decision. Whether it be a decision between going to a party and doing 5 hours of homework, or a decision between pulling a trigger and not, all actions need to be carried out with careful thinking.
If you ask anybody that knows me, they will tell you that I’m the most political minded person they’ve ever met. My goal in life is to change the world I live in for the better, whether it’s on a small scale or large scale. As I write this response, I’m watching the debate. Where 2 complete idiot's battle it out for the most pivotal and important job, in the world. However, to me, that isn’t even the biggest problem in the country right now. The problem is division of our people, and i'm not talking about just race issues. Everybody needs to pick a larger power to support. Those larger powers decide what you support, and they dictate your thoughts on any current event. For example, everybody I talked to about the police brutality issue in the United States, either say that in every situation, the cop was wrong, or the cop was right. They don’t look at it in a situation by situation way. If a cop supporter watches a cop brutally murder a defenseless man, they will still say the cops actions were justified. If a anti cop individual watches a cop shoot a man with a guy aiming at a cop, the individual will still say the cop was wrong. Why is that? Because people can’t formulate opinions by themself. People always need to go with the political wave, because they’re too ignorant to look into detail about what really happens in the world. Yes, I am a Black Lives Matter supporter. However, I’m not going to sit here and tell you everybody that got shot didn’t deserve it. I’m not going to tell you that everybody that was wrongly shot, was because of race, because that’s also a false statement. People see this issue in such a light where you can’t be on both sides. Or neither sides. Another similar issue to this is the political parties. You’re either a “brainwashed democrat” or a “racist republican”. My mom who is a conservative, always tells me how liberal I am, without even realizing that my favorite politician (such an evil word in today’s world) is republican speaker of the house, Paul Ryan. She sadly doesn’t see that. She sees that I support Immigration and refugee support. She sees that I support the war against police brutality, and stronger women's rights, and the way to handle world trade policies. She doesn’t see that I think Hillary Clinton is a two faced lucifer put upon this Earth to bring terror to our people, along with Mr. Trump. She hears me talk about the institutionalization of minorities in inner city environments. The process of supplying the ghettos with drugs and guns. Bringing childs into a world of violence and gang warfare, in order to keep the minorities in the poverty gap, and in broken down apartment buildings. It's a never ending cycle. Slavery is still around, it's just below the conscious. The war in the middle east is also a misleading name. It should be called “The war for oil” because that’s what it’s about. If we control the oil supply, we control the global economy. We tried changing governments and cultures that have been around for thousands of years, and we sit back and wonder why they hate the western world. People don’t know these things. People don’t watch jersey shore...oh my bad I meant the news. There’s a saying that “ignorance is bliss” but look how far ignorance has got us as a nation.
ReplyDeleteEveryone can agree that the world as a whole is definitely not in good shape. There's so much racism in this world, it's honestly sad that racism on died down. Racism sadly never went away. Yes, slavery is over, but is racism? The answer is no. People who aren't white have to worry about being pulled over just because of their skin color or their ethnicity. White people do not have to go out on the road being scared to be pulled over and being shot because of the color of their skin. That's the world we live in today and that makes me sick to my stomach. Everyone should be treated equally whether it be the color of their skin, their ethnicity, their sexuality, etc.
ReplyDeleteIn Oakcrest the biggest problem we have is sexism. For instance dress code, boys can wear whatever they please. Girls however have to be careful of what they wear or they're sent to the office for showing too much of their shoulders. Just because we're girls we have to wear certain clothing to school, but boys can wear whatever without any problems. It's not fair.
I am not really sure that I want to go into what I believe needs to be fixed within our country, partly because it’s such a provoking topic to discuss as this point in time, so I will stick to discussing what I feel is wrong in the society of Oakcrest, even though I love Oakcrest with all of my heart.
ReplyDeleteA high school is a place that serves (or is supposed to serve) the purpose of preparing young adults for the rest of their entire life. Don’t get me wrong, I walk into this building 5 days a week with the intention of absorbing a TON of information, but I am not given the opportunity to absorb information that is related to what I want to do with my life. Everyone tells you that high school is the ship that will sail you to your destination, but they don’t bother to offer classes that revolve around your destination. I feel like the only way we can succeed is if we know how to; why are we not taking classes that are teaching us how to pay taxes, or you know, live on our own, or even help us for our dream job? For example, if I want to be a doctor, why am I required to take history as opposed to another medical class?
Another thing that I personally feel is wrong is the fact that if I were to be wearing something as simple as a tank top, I would get in trouble for it. I find it funny how it’s a “distraction” yet isn’t it a distraction for me to have to leave class to get ridiculed for my “inappropriate” choice of clothing when really the guys starring at my shoulders are the inappropriate ones? (sorry boys, just trying to make a point). In all honesty I think we should be worrying about bigger problems other than how much of my shoulder is showing.
Don't even get me started on this whole standardized testing chaos. I understand that it is state mandated but it still has to do with school, so I am still gonna rant about it. I don't agree with the fact that I have to depend on my testing ability to get me to college, when my report cards show that I completely understand the information that I am being taught. Teachers try to tell us that we are more than a test grade, and I try to believe it, but why is there a test (SAT) that determines if I go to a good college or not? I feel as if school isn't about learning anymore; it's about memorizing material.
I can’t change the rules and regulations of school, but if I had the power to I wouldn’t think twice about it.
There are numerous problems with today's society it's impossible to point your finger on just one of them. But people are losing it. People are losing morals and respect. People aren't grateful for all the good things in the world. People are losing the will to live and are spoiled. People have have forgotten LOVE. I believe a big factor of this is the “Family”. The family is supposed to be a strong hold. You are supposed to grow up looking at your parents as the happiest people in the world the truly love each other. You get an idea of what love looks like. Your parents raise you together and both teach you right from wrong and teach respect. Your parents should be the first people to grow up to respect. They aren't your best buddy or your best friend. They your Mother and Father that love you with all their heart and want the best for you and would do anything in the world for you. The family is supposed to be united and eat together and talk about each others day and things they need help with. This all builds a strong foundation and appreciation of the world so that when kids are sent out, they are ready for the world and spread the love they learned from their parents. Have a mutual respect for everyone living on this blob in the universe. Without the family you lose the fountain to divorce. Divorce has such a great effect on children and adults. Kids see the people they love the most split apart and it's traumatizing. Then they don't have One place to call home because they bounce back and forth between Mom's house and Dads. Then the parents want to be the favorite one and they spoil the kid on both sides. Then they grow up spoiled and have a lack of respect and love they should of gotten from BOTH parents together. (Now i understand the sometimes divorce happens for good reasons and sometimes it's for the best). 50% of marriages go through divorces. It just gets worse and children are getting the punishment which initially punishes the world around us. Nowadays it's rare to have a strong family foundation that makes you so grateful for the beauty of life and the ones you love. Love is divine and is what the world needs. But it's been beaten and broken down to just be a word we say so often.
ReplyDeleteIt’s truly sad that we’re in the last few months of 2016, and there is still so much wrong with the world we live in. I could say that racism, sexism, politics, etc are the main causes, but those few things don’t make up the “big picture” in my eyes. Honestly, if there’s anything wrong with this world, it’s fact that we’re so wrapped up in temporary problems, that we all forget about the other awful things happening in different countries, and even our own. There are families without homes, children without food, and women who are denied a proper education, all because they are….women. If we’re considered one of the most richest countries, I don’t understand why we can’t help others outside of the U.S. Now, I am in no way, shape, or form saying that certain problems are more important than others, but I strongly believe that we should be giving the same amount of attention, as we do with the issues we see all over social media. It’s never too late to try and put a stop to any, and every issue out there, so just because things are bad now, doesn’t mean the “adults” of this generation should give up. In the future, when it’s up to me to determine the changes that happen in this world, I can only hope that I look back, and I’m proud of the progress that has been throughout the years.
ReplyDeleteThe biggest problem in our world right now, is violence. There have been so many tragedies such as the mass shootings in Orlando, Bristol, Dallas, Baton Rouge, and France, bombings in New York and New Jersey, mostly all linked to ISIS. But it doesn't even matter who it was linked to because people shouldn't be shooting or hurting someone. How does one wake up one day and just decide that they are going to go kill people? I don’t understand people's mindset and how their goal is to hurt and even kill sweet innocent people. I feel like all of these events are tearing our country apart and we are losing our unity. I feel like no one cares for anyone anymore. I feel like there is a huge lack of respect towards everyone. People need to learn how show some respect for everyone in the world. It shouldn't matter what type of person they are or how they act. If you have a problem with someone/something, either say something politely or keep it to yourself. There should be no reason as to why people think it's okay to kill innocent people.
ReplyDeleteAnother problem in this world and at Oakcrest, is sexism. Women do not get enough credit for all that we do. This has been a huge issue for the longest time and nothing has been done to put an end to it. Women are just as powerful as men are. It shouldn't matter what gender you are because we are all able to complete the same tasks and get the job done. Women are not respected and given as many privileges as men do. For example, playing soccer in the scorching hot heat can get a little annoying especially when you just want to take your shirt off and run around in your sports bra. But that's considered inappropriate right? And the boys soccer team can run and play with their shirts off? Now how is that fair? The simplest things like that are just treated with disrespect to women.
Sometimes what I feel is right with the world is also what I feel is wrong with the world. Societies with a stable government and laws keep people from doing what they are not supposed to do, but it also chains people to lives that never change, and even if people feel a government is corrupt, they will still follow the government out of fear. The numbers in our system add up to give people credit for the hard work they have done. Just as much as they can bring someone up, they can tear them down. I find it so absolutely absurd that the entirety of our lives depends on one 9-digit code. If someone steals this code they quite literally have your life in their hands. I feel that the way numbers apply to our world is wrong and it gives people an easy chance to have everything they worked for ripped out of their hands. The problem is that we are so deep into our system, that it would take years for change to take effect, and between the time it changed to the time it took effect, the world in between would be in a perilous state because the structure they are used to is no longer there. It should definitely happen, but the consequences and what would take it’s place are a matter to ponder over.
ReplyDeleteOne major problem in the world for me is ignorance. It's honestly all over the place from our school of oakcrest to the entire country of the USA. Ignorance is a problem because it's prevents us from making change, understanding one's feeling, and overall making the world into a stalemate. Take the terrorist ISIS for example their interpenetration of the Qu'an is so extreme that it drives them to kill, but their ignorant views fail to realize that killing doesn't do or solve anything on whatever radical view they have. Unfortunately the US is also guilty of this because of our "War on terror" the minute Pres. Bush said that we already lost. Ideas cannot be killed and time has proved that with technological invitations and philosophies. Ignorance can also lead people to be stupid and have an extreme case of close mindedness. So many people these days just look at a problem and just recklessly attack it, which solves nothing. If we just keep on attacking a problem without thinking rationally or some other method to solve it, then it will haunt us forever or worse become a way of life. Lots of people need to look at problems with an open mind 9 times out of 10 it works. So hopefully in the future people would at least be a little less ignorant and more social problems will be solved.
ReplyDeleteI'm not completely sure what's wrong with the world. It's not that I don't care about the world or what's going on. I just don't pay enough attention to realize what's wrong with society. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe I'm what's wrong with the world. I don't mean to say that I'm ruining the world. But, I mean to say that people like me aren't helping the world in any way at all because of our ignorance to the world and what's going on in it. We are all so invested in our every day lives and our normal boring routines that we don't stop to notice what's happening around us, good or bad. It's kind of selfish in a way because the only reason no one recognizes problems in this world is because of he fact that they only really care about what's going on in their own life. However, most of this stuff going on in the world is eventually going to end up effecting our every day lives. When this happens, we'll wish we could've realized what was going on, and done something about it. For example, I don't even know what's going on with the election right now. That's really scary because I know nothing about anyone who is going to be running the country I live in by 2017. As a society we need to become more enlightened about what's happening in the world that we live in. I don't think the problem is that no body wants to do anything about our worlds problems. I just think that no one is really noticing our worlds problems. The sooner people recognize these issues, the sooner these issues will be resolved.
ReplyDeleteIn todays society the issue of equality throughtout the races is at an all time high.People debating whether police shootings are due to a target to a specific race or are they just doing their jobs? From the outside looking in people can't just put their self in the perspective of the person who got shot put yourself in the perspective of the shooter.Yes, the person who got shot has a family at home so does a police officer.Everyday that the officer goes out into the world with his badge on to protect civilians his ultimate goal is to get home to his wife in kids. Its hard for people to evaluate these specific deaths because, we were not there.Cops in my opinion should have to wear cameras on their uniform or have to start recording after they pull someone over.To avoid the issue of no one knowing what happened because, a corpse doesn't make a good witness.I'm not against cops doing their job when I need they are the first people to call when something occurs. Even though, some cops are corrupt and do plenty wrong but, for the most part they do more good deeds then wrongful ones and we have to shed light on that.We need to revaluate the individual we put in these positions.I can't pathom how cops learn 7 techniques of restraints when they feel threated but, the first thing they do is pull their weapon.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing that goes along with equality on a high I feel as though when teaching the lenchings and real grusome events that occured in the South we must not censor the truth. We have to be exposed to it raw and look it straight in the eye because, it happened its not fake it not a rumor. Its real life and if someone can't accept that it happen and continue to live in denial how can we ever move on?How can we move on in a world where a originally Black group formed after police tragedies is labled as a terriost group. We are all americans we have to be less desensitized and more empathetic and understanding.People are always one sided instead of seeing it from the other persons point of view.Just because, Black Lives Matter is Pro-Black doesn't make them Anti-White either. We all have our own beliefs but, regardless of what you believe there is always the medium right from wrong. As a nation I'm starting to lose faith in us how can we have came so far to go back to where we started? Have we reached our maximum compacity of tolerating equality. Is History repeating its self? In order to find a solution to the epidemic our country is facing. It may sound cliché to all lives matter but, its true once we value another life over the next an continue to have these cruel outlooks on each other based of things we can't control like the color of our skin it will result in war.We have to put this to a hault and not continue to fuel the fire.
The world, such a beautiful place. That is what I want to say anyway. In reality it is chock full of evil, horrendous, vile, evil. The hate and prejudice is overflowing on the news, and it seems that a new person is dead every day for no good reason. You are right, we are in bad shape. You are also right again, it is up to us to fix it. What is wrong with the world on a large scale is simply too much evil, and the only way to combat it is with an overflow of love and understanding. We need more mensches and heroes. However, this is all easier said then done. Generations and generations of our predecessors could not do it, so what makes us different? I believe we are the beginning of a new era. We are more sensitive to things our predecessors were a little more callous to. More rights are being given out here and there, and I truly believe that if we can understand others' pain, and show our hearts to each other, then we can truly achieve peace. Going the extra mile to show friendship to one another, even if the other spurns your advances, will undoubtedly make a change. We must have a desire to understand one another, and this has to start at the microcosmic level.
ReplyDeleteFor example, Oakcrest High School. Think about how many times you have heard about or seen a fight. Why? At the high school level there should not be that many fights. Clashes over ideals should only exist on the verbal level, and should not escalate into a brawl. If kids are fighting like this now, what about when they are grown men who have access to guns? I am sure if the people fighting were able to understand one another, and love each other, it would not have to get to that point. I do know that a clash of fists will sometimes help on person to understand the other, but I would rather it not get to that point. It is a tall order, but it is also a necessary one.
The world is a big place. It's not just all about the big countries such as U.S.A., the U.K., Russia, and China. There are countries not even heard of by a good chunk of the people living in countries that are first world. Third world countries are mostly located in continents like Africa and Asia. The meaning of third world is used to describe poor countries like my own, Nepal represent, where poverty affects most of the people. It's not just in third world countries but also first world countries as well where people are poor that they can barely survive. The difference is the amount of people in each country that are in poverty. Each country has it's fair share of people killing and people dying. The dying part is a way of life where if no one dies, it would be a bad thing as shown in a certain series called "Torchwood: Miracle Day" which basically has no one dying leading to chaos. Back to the point of the blog, people killing people happens. Death can happen to anyone. You might have a chance to stop people, you might not. As said by one of my favorite singer, Akon, in his song Ghetto, "Even the life you have is borrowed. Cause your not promised tomorrow." meaning that you could die at any moment. People have many reasons to kill, although most of them are frowned upon by society. In today's world, people kill for their belief, ISIS, or people kill because they were bullied. The former can not be helped but the latter could have been prevented. In the Black Eyed Peas' song in 2003, the title of the song is called "Where is the Love." If the person could have felt some form of love instead of being made fun of, he might have not become a killer blinded by hate for the bullies that tormented him day after day.
ReplyDeleteAs mentioned before, the Black Eyed Peas came out with the song, "Where is the Love" where the reason for the song is to make people think differently from hate. After the event of 9/11, Bush declared war on terrorism, an idea, leading to war with terrorists. War just brings more death and hate. Discrimination is also part of the song where it can be directed towards not only Muslims, but to other ethnic groups as well since people think of their own race as the better. Also mentioned is people's greed towards money that they would rather take money and not care about the consequences of what happens to the people that are affected. These things are what's wrong with the world. Also quite recently, a remake of the song from the group, although they disbanded but the original members took part in the song, talks about new problems in the recent years. The 2016 version addresses various social justice issues such as the protest of excessive violence, police brutality and discrimination based on race (mostly the immigration crisis), religious beliefs across the world and gender differences, and what is shown in the media such as the Paris bombing and the conflict in Syria. These wicked things are out there in the world we live in which is why Will.I.AM was prompted to make this remake where he says "instead of spreading love, we're spreading animosity," which is true. Drama just keeps adding up, fueling people's' hate towards certain groups. To fix these problems is to do what DJ Khaled said which was, "Love is the key," and, "Love is powerful". Love is considered positive, but not unrequited love. That's depressing. The adults don't have a forgive attitude anymore since they have more years of witnessing sins committed across the world, however, teenagers have not as much. Teenagers can add the love. If love comes to the play the world would be a better place. Hate equals hostility which equals either someone wanting to beat up someone else or kill others. We can change that to love which equals friendliness which, in turn, equals peace. To change the world we need love. One question the world should be asking is "Where is the Love."
This world is in chaos... total chaos. Terrorism, violence, sexism, unemployment, poverty--and the list continues on. Political unrest lies just about everywhere in every continent, from Africa to Europe, to even South America. With these prime issues obviously also present here in America, the so-called land of liberty and justice for all, the main issue is-- yes, you guessed it, racism!
ReplyDeleteThe whole race issue is just so pathetic and unnecessary at this point. I mean, our country is extremely diverse! Why am I hearing faced negative racial experiences? Again I say, we are in the year 2016, and it is inessential for us hear about modern acts of injustice towards minorities, significantly the most with black people. For what seems like ages, white supremacy has controlled society in various aspects, whether it would be in jobs, education, or even television. The issue with that is that being a white person in America opposed to being black has automatic advantage over blacks. Whites do not have a need to fear of being discriminated based on their race due to the fact that they are the vast majority of this country. However, for black people, that is not the case as for decades African-Americans have been systematically oppressed in our society.
The fundamental issue with racism is the educational roots and upbringing of a person. No one is born racist; they learn it. If one was taught to appreciate, respect, and accept each other's differences, then we would all grow up and see the beauty of diversity without racism, such as how little kids are friends with whatever race, blind to color. However, if one was taught for example that only white people with blue eyes and blond hair are the higher, better people in society and we all must hate or reject anyone different than that due to all not being equal, then you grew up with racist values. This in its entirety adds fuel to the bigotry fire. In addition to that, racism lives on because racist whites have not experienced what it is like to face systematic oppression. Therefore, from their upbringing experience, they have ignorance and do not understand the pain this causes in the black community, resulting in anger such as the entire #BlackLivesMatter movement where in opposition, #AllLivesMatter was created. #BlackLivesMatter was not to intend that all lives do not matter, but it should be a factor to alert people that the lives of African-Americans should not be a daily threat or victim of ignored discrimination as it appears to be. Whites who do not have the upbringing to understand #BlackLivesMatter say #AllLivesMatter because of ignorance. Saying #AllLivesMatter instead of #BlackLivesMatter is like going to a breast cancer awareness walk to raise money to find the cure for breast cancer, yet instead throughout the entire walk, scream, "What about diabetes?" Does the fact that money is being specifically raised towards that cancer walk for breast cancer at the moment implies that the diabetes disease does not matter? No!Of course not! The sad truth, it is that this became a dividing factor in political parties as we see today (just look at our presidential candidates for goodness sake). We all need to end racism for good regardless of whatever you may believe in. It is absolutely appalling that something as simple as the color of one's skin or ethnicity has the capability of determining societal rank. In order to change that, people, specifically regarding whites who happen to be racist, need to be aware that life may not be the same for another person. They need to put themselves in their position, or shoes. Basically, we as a whole need to be educated without racist values and spread them, hiring no one in the workforce who is prejudiced to enforce racism, which is against the federal law. Thankfully, things are not where they used to be, but it is still not perfect just yet. Now, it is up to us to change that for good for our country to actually live up to the long-claimed reputation and standard: "with liberty and justice for all".
The World today is not exactly the ideal world to live in. One major problem in this world is the division in our citizens. All across our country city to city their are fine lines of division that separate communities and towns. Now in some cases separation of mindsets is what makes america unique. However i am talking about the type of separation that is not good for this nation. Im talking about a type of separation where one side is so close minded that they wont even think about their actions towards the other people. They will just make decisions base on their feelings, and from that become separated. The adults of our country have allowed this to spread by becoming part of it themselves. So many parents are beyond reasonable and create a line of separation between themselves and the person on the other side. Parents feed into this problem by creating or joining the drama and not even thinking about the other side.
ReplyDeleteOur current generation will be able to fix/better this problem because we are much more open minded, and we tend to accept things more than our parents do. Our generation will be able to stop this problem right in its tracks, because we tend to look at both sides before making our decisions. We as a community and country will unite and sometimes just have to agree to disagree and I believe our generation can do that.

ReplyDeleteNothing is wrong with the world. If this is my view, then that is true for the world I live in. If you believe that world is a living cesspool of crime and a horrible place, then this is true for the world you live in. For the reader that hasn't caught on yet, the world around you will only be how you view it. If you are firm to your beliefs then the world itself shapes to them. Perhaps this is why they say ignorance is bliss, for the one who only knows of the positive in the world, lives in the world of happiness while the knowledgeable live in the world of possibilities. From what I've seen of the world, it's not particularly good, however I don't really care. After around 100 years of life I'll be decomposing somewhere 6ft under, so why should I try to change anything? Posterity? I'll never meet most of them and my friends and most of my family I've grown with will be dead, so I'd rather follow my conscious and live as I want to and die with no regrets. Other people may say, "well that just means you're part of the problem."True, however, I have not said that I will ignore every problem that presents itself. If I feel I should side with a decision on a matter, I will naturally do so; however, I will not go out of my way for a problem I don't care about. Justice cannot be had if there is no power to back it up, and in today's society we are actually trying to take power away from the people who uphold justice. So you decide what world you live in; I will be here, living how I want to.
ReplyDeleteWhat do I think is wrong? I do not think there is anything wrong with the world we live in. The world is such a beautiful place with a gorgeous atmosphere. But it is us, the people, our society, whom make it ugly. Ugly is such an understatement, petrifying is more like it. Every single one of us has made some kind of contribution to giving our world this reputation. It could be small, big, microscopic even, all of us have helped create what we are as people whether we know it or not. Racism, violence, ignorance, and sexism are all great examples of what is wrong with us, the people. But I think it’s something greater than that; physical appearance. Physical appearance includes all of those fragments leading to real issue. Physical appearance being the the real issue. Your very first impression of somebody is what they look like. What nationality they are, what sex, what they’re wearing, everything that builds you this idea of how they carry themselves. Nothing to do with who they are, only what they are. Racism has to do with what you are. Caucasian, African American, Native American, etc., all can determine whether you’re undermined or all the way on top. Sexism, what you are. Being a male or female. Girls are undermined, because “It’s a known fact that males are stronger,” ‘It’s because you’re a girl,” ‘You throw like a girl.” As for males, “You can’t do that, it’s not “manly” enough,” “That’s too girly for a guy,” “What are you, gay?” This is all based on what we are, not who we are. Ignorance and violence builds on top of that. All of those things that have to do with racism and sexism, we can determine with once glance at someone we know nothing about. Ignorance, bashing one’s physical appearance. Taking it to the next level of not only assuming but saying it out loud. Hurting one’s character, self-esteem, for what they are, not who they are. Ignorance leads to violence. Saying something that shouldn’t have been said in the first place could easily lead to violence. This all branches off and escalates because of one thing, physical appearance! This is what is wrong with the world. I shouldn’t say world, us, the one’s taking advantage of how beautiful this world could really be.
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to the problems of the world some people think there is a quick and easy fix, and sometimes that is the case, but most of the time there is a lot of effort and time required to make change happen. How can we expect to grow and learn and become better if we do not make a conscious effort to do so? My peers and I, as a generation, have the potential to make this WORLD great and something to be proud of, because a generation does not just consist of your hometown, or state. I feel there have always been problems with the world, but they seem to be progressively getting worse, these days it is not uncommon to find a student with drugs or weapons, which is a very scary and very real possibility. Students nowadays just want to be with the in crowd, they want friends more than they want a great career. They like it more when somebody compliments them on their new shoes rather than their good grades. My point is, there is no change to the world unless we change ourselves, because when you think about it, we are the future, and that is a very big responsibility that has been passed on to us by our parents. I know that if we all set our minds straight we can take this responsibility and turn it into something amazing, we can change this world around.
ReplyDeleteThere is way to much hatred in the world we live in today. Hatred is the root to all of our problems. The world will not change until we change. Personally i do not hate any one or anything, instead i chose to say i dislike things. But I believe every one is cool. You do not have to be Friends with every one but people could be a little nicer. I hear a bunch of words that are related to hatred everyday in school. I heard a girl in the hall way today saying that she was going to beat the hell out of another girl because she said something about her. That is how shit starts man, who cares what people say about you be the bigger person and walk away. People these days do not have much common sense too. Disrespect pisses me off too. If a teacher tells you to sit down just sit down how hard is it. But some people like to see how far they can take it and see how mad the teacher gets. Have some class and be respectful to the person that takes time out of there lives to teach us. And the whole thing with the cop shooting's, it is very bad and all and the dirty cops should be put away for a long long time and justice should be served for the loved ones who have lost a family member but not all cops are bad man. Having family members in the police force I can tell you that those men and women are just human beings like me and you. They are trying to serve and protect the community and at the end of the day trying to go home to the ones that they love safely.
ReplyDeleteI’m not going to sit here and write about what I think is wrong with the world, because if that were the case then my blog would never end. Instead, I’m going to take a more “micro” outlook on things and talk about what I think is wrong in our small, overcrowded society here at Oakcrest. The biggest problem that we face here is the inability to accept. By that, I don’t mean that we’re all too racist, too homophobic, or too sexist. As a whole, we are capable for accepting people for who they are, but only when it comes to the things that we know they can’t control. Skin color, sexual orientation, and gender don’t really matter to us. What we fail to accept is the things that we feel that people do have control over. We have a problem with the way people act, the way they talk, and the things they do. We characterize people into groups: The good kids. The bad kids. The smart kids. The dumb kids. The sweet kids. The ghetto kids. Some groups are liked, and some groups are frowned upon. But of course, which groups belong to which category depends on which groups we belong to. And as opposed to the groups accepting one another and choosing to get along as one, bigger group, we instead choose to be biased. We refuse to put ourselves into someone else’s shoes and accept what they are. We see the boy who is doing drugs and getting in trouble. But we refuse to think about the fact that his home life is worse than whatever we think he is. And we refuse to remember that one time that he made us laugh, and the nights he texted you and made you smile. We refuse to see anything but the boy who does drugs and gets in trouble. And we blame him for not being better.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with Oakcrest is that we spend too much time seeing the bad in people to give them even the slightest chance to show us the good. We get an idea so fixed in our minds that we refuse to let it alter. We’re the first to acknowledge the bad, and almost never acknowledge the good. Since I have come to terms with this horrid trait that we all carry with us, I’ve made it a point to be better about judging anyone. That being said, I also don’t blame anyone who still does carry that trait with them. The adults of the past generation have implanted this trait in us, and to this day, continue to push it a little deeper as opposed to trying to get rid of it. Teachers here see someone run down the hall, screaming, while they’re teaching a class. And as opposed to saying “Wow. That kid is living their life. They’re happy. They must be doing something right,” they instead roll their eyes, and choose to tell their class a story of when they saw that same person doing something else inappropriate around the school, so that suddenly the student that ran down the hall doesn’t have just one person who grimaces when they see them, but now an entire class. As a whole, if we all realized we have this trait, and tried to better ourselves, we would make the family that we have worked so hard to create here at Oakcrest even stronger.

ReplyDeleteMy original plan was to talk about racism and sexism but since there are so many posts already about those two topics, I would like to talk about something else. I know it’s not a big deal to the average person but I’m going to talk about the foster care system. I was fortunate enough to have a somewhat smooth adoption process but I have met a few people that have went from foster home to foster home for a plethora of reasons. The system is broken, it’s been broken for years, there’s no denying that. One of the main issues with the system is that there are privatized homes. Instead of being ran by the state, there are homes that are being ran by organizations who are just in it for the money. Some of the “organizations” are so short of homes for kids to go to that even federal criminals, yes I said federal, can take in children. So basically, criminals are getting paid to take care of child that they shouldn’t have in the first place. What’s even worse is that when the child is put into the privatized home, they are most likely getting mistreated/abused. In a LA Times article, it says that kids are more likely to be victims of three main types of abuse (physical, emotional and sexual) than if they were to be put into a state-run home. I don’t know about you and I don’t know why but my heart broke when I read that. Privatized homes were supposed to be less expensive and safer than state-run homes. Well that’s a big fat lie because now it’s expensive as heck and it’s very dangerous. When kids run away from their first home, they’re just put back into another abusive home. It’s a never ending circle of abuse.
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing about this whole private vs state situation is that all these kids want is a second chance on family. They don’t ask to get abused. They don’t ask to be neglected. They just want to be loved and wanted. That’s all they want. If the foster care system were to punish those who abuse their foster child and take their rights away, we wouldn’t be seeing headlines on articles that say “Boy’s Death Prompts Review of Foster Care System”. The system wouldn’t be broken if social workers just did their motherfreaking job and monitored the child to make sure they’re safe. Right now, there is a lack of monitoring and that needs to change because there are so many beautiful souls getting hurt all because they’re in the wrong hands of someone. There are couples who would love to have a child and are more than stable to take care of one but instead, they get nothing while convicted criminals are taking care of an innocent child.
Nothing is right in this world today. People commit heinous acts everyday with no remorse. Reckless gun handling is the cause of many deaths and something that happens globally. 1 in 5 women will be raped in their life, rape percentages have skyrocketed throughout these few years. Crimes that were once considered unheard of have now become everyday occurrences when we flick on the news. All of these things are effects of selfish mined humans . A huge majority of the people on this earth are strictly worried about themselves only. Rather than being courteous of others and thinking of ways to make the world a better place, they take the easy route. The route that improves no one's well being besides their own. Empathy is something that should be instilled in every child at a young age. When you have the ability to feel for others you see the world in a whole different way. If everyone on the earth had just a little empathy, the world wouldn’t be quite so terrible. We wouldn’t have to lock our doors. No one would steal because their consciences wouldn’t allow them to. The power of empathy wouldn’t allow them to. It wouldn’t allow them to take someone else's belongings, because deep down they would know that although taking what they want might satisfy them a whole lot, that one action could damage another person even more. Too many selfish people turn to senseless acts of violence. When a person is shot and killed it is much more abstruse than just simply a bullet going into someone. It is much more than a death. It is never ending pain felt by their loved ones. When a person dies, the pain also kills their loved ones. The person behind the gun with the audacity to pull the trigger is blinded and ignorant. They are not strong minded enough to feel the pain of others. Genuine altruism would cure the world of hurtful words and actions toward others.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many things wrong with today's society and how we live. We have been living divided rather than coming together as a whole since day 1. I truly believe the biggest problem we have is how everyone is treated differently whether it be through religion, race, and even the amount of money you have. People divide themselves from each other and pick a group to be in instead of coming together. I’m not saying that all people are horrible racist scumbags but I think a lot of the time we do it unknowingly. We separate ourselves from others and form these groups of the rich from the poor, black from white, Muslim from Christianity and I just really think if we came together and worked together the world would be better. As far as the Oakcrest population goes, I think that we are honestly a good group of kids surrounded by good teachers but we have a problem with being able to accept people for who they are. Bullying is a problem we have and the main reason it happens is because people just can’t accept others for being different. I see people being made fun of for the music they like, the clothes they wear, and other small things that show how they live their life. The judgement is the cause for so many unnecessary fights that draw people apart from each other, which brings me back into my argument about how the world divides itself. Everyone judges each other. No one is willing to accept people for who they are, we use stereotypes before actually talking to a person and we are so quick to tell someone they aren't accepted because it is easy. I guess I am just really tired of seeing people get treated so differently because how I see it, if we just came together and helped each other live rather than fight each other, thing would be so much better. But that’s more of a Utopian world we can only imagine. It’s things like these that we have the power to change that we choose not to, that ruin us.
ReplyDeleteThe world we live in is fucked up. Now normally I wouldn't curse but thinking about the things going on around me makes me sick to my stomach. The problem with this world is hatred. Growing up my mom taught me to be kind to everyone. She told me to never hate or mistreat someone because of their gender, race, or sexual orientation. So for me to look at the news and the world around me and see that innocent people are being killed because of the color of their skin infuriates me. People need to stop ignoring what's going on and open their eyes. THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. This has happened on MULTIPLE occasions. Rumain Brisbon, Tamir Rice, Kajieme Powell, Eric Garner, Yvette Smith, Jonathan Ferrell, Ervin Jefferson, Tamon Robinson, Trayvon Martin are just a few of the unarmed people killed by police. The only thing they all had in common was the color of their skin. Now don't get me wrong I am NOT saying all cops are racist and target people of color. What I am saying is this violence NEEDS to stop. I am saying that this is real. That this is happening.
ReplyDeleteIt baffles me how people pretend that this isn't the world we are living in. Remember when you were younger and your parents would be waiting for you at the bus stop when you got home. How would you feel if you got home and found out that your parent whether it was your mom or dad was shot while waiting for you. That's what happened to Keith Lamont Scott. He was an unarmed, black, and disabled father reading a book in his car while waiting for his son to come home from school. Think about that. Think about how insane that is. To be killed while going about your day not harming anyone in any way by the people put here to protect you. Let that sink in. That is the world we are living in. A world where being black is a crime. A world where black people are scared to do things like walk down the street. This is not a world I want my kids to live in. And for the people reading this who are thinking “cops have killed white people too” don't sit there and try to tell me that this isn't a race issue. That these people are not being targeted because of their skin color when that is exactly what is happening.
Let's stop talking about killing for a second and think about this. Being black puts you at a higher risk of incarceration. At a higher risk of being stopped, searched, and frisked. There are little kids watching what's going on and it's scaring them. They're being shown things that make them feel like there skin color is wrong or ugly. Black is beautiful. It is not a crime. No one should feel unsafe in their own skin. I think adults should stop forcing their beliefs on their kids. If racist parents teach their kids that and those kids teach their kids it becomes a cycle of racism. Hate is not something we are born with. Hate is something we learn. I will teach my kids to love people regardless of race. This generation is more open minded in my opinion. It's our jobs to educate our future kids and the people around us. We need to be teaching love not hate. I could go on and on about this and so many more things. Don't even get me started on lgbt rights. If it wasn't for the fact that I have a ton of homework I still need to finish and a test to study for this would be a lot longer. Overall I just want to say that everyone deserves to be treated equally.
“We’re living inside of a $75 billion per year failed experiment”. This is how Hank Green from vlogbrothers describes the incarceration system. When we think of crime, we think of bad people and hate. We think they should be punished because they did a bad thing. We think “once a bad person, always a bad person”. But just because you broke the law and stole some laptops to pay off your student loans, it doesn’t mean you have to go to jail for it. It means there’s another problem and they need help, not a five year punishment because it won’t fix it. Mass incarceration is short-sighted. Sending someone to jail for something especially small has a huge negative impact on a person’s life, but people don’t realize that. It doesn’t mean a safer community; it’s actually the opposite, as research has shown. Once you have a criminal record, it’s harder to find a job, buy a house, find financial help. Ultimately, it means it’s harder to survive and to keep your family alive. When you can’t have any of that, it means more crime and jail time-- a never ending cycle without help.
ReplyDeleteThe US has the highest incarceration rate in the world. This doesn’t mean we have more bad people-- it means we send too many people to prisons, thinking it will help. But, this is unfair. What we need to do is use those billions of dollars to go to solving the issues that are forcing people to do crimes, preventing them from having to resort it again and keeping people out of the system all together. We can’t base our decisions on people based on facts. We need to be more sympathetic, spread more love, and support more people. Because people can change and you never know the whole story.
On a lighter note, pennies need to go. It takes 1.8 cents to make 1 penny and it’s literally not worth any time to pay with pennies. Every time someone bothers with them, people lose money from opportunity costs. It fails at being what it’s supposed to do (make exchanging goods and services easier) and it’s a deadweight. There are already countries who’ve gotten rid of them and there wasn’t a big difference. Prices didn’t rise and charities didn’t lose money. Even the US Military has gotten rid of it at overseas bases. All of the cash transactions just rounded to the nearest 5 cents.

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, but sadly a lot of people seem to forget that. Walking into stores and standing in the checkout line seeing magazines titled “How to lose 50 pounds in a month” or scrolling on your youtube feed coming across a video titled “How you can become prettier” can quickly lower a man or women’s self-esteem. We live in a society where if your eyebrows aren’t on “fleek” or if your body isn’t “lovely” you are considered a disgrace. In this day in age all we care about is appearance, but since when did that get us anywhere?
ReplyDeleteSocial media and television has a huge impact on the way we see and value our beauty. According to Common Sense Media’s report, children as young as 5 years old “express dissatisfaction with their bodies.” With this in mind ABC News states that “The onset of anorexia nervosa has two peaks, one at ages 10 to 13, and the other at ages 13 to 18.” A child this young shouldn’t at ALL WORRY ABOUT THEIR WEIGHT. We need to teach children at a young age that they are beautiful. When we are sitting down watching television and a weight watchers commercial comes on we need to tell our SONS and DAUGHTERS that we are all made differently and that we don’t have to change ourselves for anyone.
Instead of flooding the media about being “pretty” appearance wise. We need to spread the message about have a lovely personality. People need to realize that because attractive isn’t going to accomplish their goals for them. A PERSONALITY and a BRAIN is!
There's so many things wrong with our society but the main thing is the people in this world. Those topics such as racism and sexism would've never came about without people. People just have to learn to be more respectful and kind to others. When people try to control other people's choices something bad will happen. Such as same sex marriage when you try and force them to not be gay, there now tons of protests. Protests are another thing in the world that is bad. I mean yeah people are allowed to voice their opinion and freedom of speech but sometimes protests get out of hand and get violent. In which can cause a civil war. All in all the problem of our world is the people and the people suck.
ReplyDeleteI would treat others with respect and just mind my own business
DeleteOne problem with society is the importance of how much money you have; society and the world itself revolve around money. Not just today, but also throughout history, where it determines what social class you are and how your future is going to be. Today, the infrastructure of society all depends on how much money one person has. With money, you could get an abundance of advantages that would benefit that person’s future. Without a plethora of money, you and your family may be pressed by the overwhelming weight called stress; where the questions of how are they going to pay the bills, pay off the loans, and have enough to afford a decent meal. A much more have it worse. For instance, in third world countries today, such as Niger, you would see a bunch of starving, unsanitized, and depressed people who do not have any of the privileges that we have due to living in a first world country. Additionally, money plays the main part of student’s choice of colleges and how long student loans will burden them. Most of the colleges that have a good reputation, like Harvard, Yale, or John Hopkins all have expensive tuitions due to being more well known as a prestigious school. Without initially having the money to afford it, the only way to attend these schools are either through the help of scholarships, which can be unlikely or through student loans, which varies on how long will it take to pay it off. Colleges only care about getting your money that you promised that you will pay back somehow and at least half of the students who even go to college in their first year, will drop out for a variety of reasons, one being too expensive. The stress of paying off college tuitions are something rich people do not get to experience usually. Being rich allows you to obtain the luxury of not having to worry about the tuition, thus allowing you to get access to higher level jobs that could affect their future in a positive way. While people with no money have to rely on loans to have a chance of getting those jobs. Overall, society’s pressure on the amount of money a person has affects their future or life in a negative or positive way.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, there are no ways to solve the main problem with society and money, since that would be leading to the idea that everyone would have equal chances and to be equal to everyone else, rich or poor. To decrease the conflicts of your future depending on the amount of money one have, I would attempt to decrease college tuition rates and help those who are in the poverty line by organizing a shelter where those can eat and sleep in.
Any sort of discrimination is the biggest wrong to me. I hate when people put others down because of their race, sex, etc. People have no right to judge others or put them down, no matter the circumstances. I have always seen discrimination as one of the biggest crimes a person could commit. Nobody should ever be seen as less than somebody else. Nobody should have to deal with constant criticism from others. Nobody should hate living in their own skin. Discrimination is seen all around the world constantly. But discrimination is also something that will always be there no matter how hard we try to get rid of it. Some people don’t even recognize when they put others down and that’s the main reason why there’s nothing we can do to stop it. In order to stop discrimination all around the world, everyone would have to acknowledge their wrongdoings and learn to stop it. But that is nearly impossible. Nothing about the world we live in will ever be perfect and that’s something we need to deal with.
ReplyDelete“And I want to begin with an observation that, given the challenges that we face in the world and the headlines we see every day, may seem improbable, but it’s true. We are fortunate to be living in the most peaceful, most prosperous, most progressive era in human history. That may surprise young people who are watching TV or looking at your phones and it seems like only bad news comes through every day. But consider that it’s been decades since the last war between major powers. More people live in democracies. We’re wealthier and healthier and better educated, with a global economy that has lifted up more than a billion people from extreme poverty, and created new middle classes from the Americas to Africa to Asia. Think about the health of the average person in the world -- tens of millions of lives that we now save from disease and infant mortality, and people now living longer lives. ”-( Obama, Barack. "Remarks by President Obama in Address to the People of Europe." The White House. The White House, 25 Apr. 2016. Web. 27 Sept. 2016. )
ReplyDeleteIf it wasn’t the president saying the statement above most people would think it was some crazy person, you might even think the president is crazy now. A lot of people are probably saying to themselves “Have you not seen the news recently? People are dying left and right, major terrorist attacks are the norm now, how could you possibly believe this?” and to that, I say actually think about the history of human beings. From the terrible conditions of disease without cures to slavery, we have had a pretty messed up history. So why is it that in a world that seems like sunshine and rainbows to the past, including recent, seems so dark to us? Two words, Ignorance and arrogance, are what make are world feel like a real-life depiction of hell. One of the major examples of these two words literally destroying a nation is the police racism issue. While I don’t believe that majority of the police force is racist we do need to provide better training with firearms because I feel that most of the recent shootings have happened when an officer breaks down under pressure or jumps the gun (no pun intended) on a situation that could have been handled better. We need to teach that these are not tools for everyday police duty but are the last resort, and I mean absolute last resort. Not as simple to fix as it may seem in my writing however it should not be reaching the tipping point like it is today. From the extremist of the cop side, whether it be actual racists or those who simply won’t recognize the problem occurring, to those(extremists) of the #BlackLivesMatter group. You’re not a radical if you side with the cops most of the time or a are BLM advocate but the ones of each group who take it too far have turned a grey area into a one-side-or-the-other mentality. In order to fix problems like this, we have to come together as a country to understand both sides so we come to an agreement on what should be happening to prevent these shootings. By forming polar opposite sides to these crises we make them even worse. Using reasoning and cooperation for such issues could create a world with less violence, war, and hate. This would also allow us to shift our focus to more important problems like the lack of clean water, sanitation, medical supplies and medicine, food, shelter, as well as any other basic human necessity that we take for granted while some in this world die from starvation along with disease while we tweet at each other about how “messed up” America is right now.
There's a lot of messed up things going on in the world right now but the main reason I believe that the world is "corrupt" is because of the ignorance in America. The reason I believe that ignorance is the main factor in the way the world is today is that ignorance leads to everything good or bad, because the less knowledge you're most likely to be violent not saying everyone that's ignorant is violent but when you're lacking knowledge you're less aware of what's going on because you're uneducated so there's a chance you might get violent. The only one to really fix this is to change what we're learning in schools really so if you pay attention in that life class or whatever it maybe you're educated on what's going on in today's world. There's other things that also need to be worked on in schools such as classes that show you the ideal way to live so when you get into the street as an adult you won't do or say the wrong thing and maybe lose your life like nowadays. To teach people how to treat other people in school would be a valuable class to have in school, even in the teacher just talked about the basic ways people should already treat each other, but using that everyday will hopefully show people they don't have to be assholes all the time. I honestly don't believe the adults of today's world are doing anything wrong because if that's how you're raised your whole life you're gonna think it's okay so I blame the way the world is today on the two to three generations earlier than us.
ReplyDeleteI am living in this world with 7 billion other people… and my brain, all my collection of thoughts, all my experiences are different from anyone else’s. At this point in my life I would like to think that I am a understanding, kind hearted, and optimistic person. If you know me at all, you will rarely hear me talk about politics, controversial topics - so basically anything in the news. This is because I make the decision to keep my opinions to myself. It doesn’t mean that I don’t have opinions, but it means that I don’t like to discuss certain topics. Furthermore, with social media and all these horrible events that are occurring in the world, society and adults make it seem like EVERYONE has to voice their opinion. But don’t get me wrong, I respect people who stand up for what they believe in, but if you don’t want to, then you shouldn’t have to. Adults always say, “You are the future of America,” or “You have to do your best to make this world a better place.” But, what if I don’t want to be the person to change the world? Why is this such a bad thing to say? I mean I can barely make it through high school, I could barely come up with what to write about for this blog. What if I want to live my life supporting and loving myself and the people I care about. So what if I don’t have an idea to create world peace or come up with the new iPhone 15? Does it mean that I’m not living my life to the fullest? On another note, I strongly believe that people need to have more respect. Everyone in this world doesn’t think the same thing… and that’s ok. You may see your side as the “right side”, but you shouldn’t criticize someone for not thinking the same thing. If I strongly oppose with what someone says or believes, it is not my job to yell in someone’s face or physically hurt them because they disagree with me. Give respect. No two people are exactly alike.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, it irritates me when adults or parents tell a teenager they are living their life wrong. Each generation is different from the last, and as adults, they should want to learn from their kids and guide them so they can have a successful future. One cannot force their child to become a doctor if they do not wish to become one. One cannot force their child to attend an Ivy league school and go there for 4 years. Kids have to make their own choices (maybe they may not be the ideal one), but they should choose what they see making them happy in the future. There isn’t a set routine everyone has to follow in life. Go to school, go to college, get a job, get married, have kids, then retire. If someone doesn’t want that life, they shouldn’t be seen as less of a person than someone who does. And by all means, if that’s the life you want, then go right ahead, if thats whats going to make me happy then I shouldn't be criticized for that either. It’s all about respect and realizing that not everyone can be content with the same things.
Somehow I believe that the "wrong" in our world is due to our own ignorance and our silence. We all grow up hearing the phrase "life isn't fair", and it absolutely is. Why, you may ask? Because our society is stupid. At least that's what I think (but then again who really cares what I think). We put people in charge that don't know what the heck they're doing and we allow that. And what's even worse is that no one says anything about it. We live in a world where being quiet and obedient gets you places. If you speak up you're considered an outcast and you're a part of the issue now. "See no evil, do no evil" they say. "I don't want to get involved" they say. "It's not any of my business" they say. What these are, are excuses. I believe that if you see an injustice and you don't do anything about it then you're just as terrible as the people who committed the injustice in the first place. You're doing no good to yourself and to the oppressed by keeping your mouth shut. In fact you're harming the victims but closing your mouth. Let's take this back to the civil rights era. Before blacks had their rights and people actually stood up, no one said anything. Whites who believed that African Americans were treated badly didn't say a word because its none of their business or because they didn't want to get involved. The silence of others harmed the oppressed and allowed the oppressors to do what they wished to do. Think about this at Oakcrest. For example bullying. There are too many people that get bullied in this school. What's even worse than the bullies are the bystanders that literally just stand there. You have a voice but you choose not to use it. Why? You don't want to get involved. Little did you know that if you said something that kid wouldn't go home and cry everyday. Little did you know that if you said something that kid wouldn't have lost all their self-esteem. Little did you know that if you had had said something back then that kid wouldn't have developed anxiety and depression. How do I know this? Because I was one of those kids. Kids that got hurt because no one wanted to do what was right. I was bullied. I was hurt. But I promise that I would never ever just sit there and watch someone get hurt.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe that we keep our mouths shut because we want to though. We remain silent because we were taught to. Everyone can tell you that you have to stick up for yourself and that you have to remain true to yourself but the ways the rules are enforced, it's the opposite. Let's bring Oak back in the situation. If there was a fight, and you tried to break it up you would get into trouble. If you believed that what a teacher said was wrong and argued with them you would get into trouble. People don't like it when other people challenge them. It's sickening honestly. What we are forced to do basically is to look the other way and don't say anything because there will be consequences. It's pretty disgusting isn't it? But there are still people that risk it. People that risk the consequences because they believe that they have a voice and they have to use it. Those are the people that I think should be in charge. Those people should encourage others to do exactly what they did. That's how you right the wrongs. Because you have a voice and you should use it.
